It was such a great experience that I stayed for an entire month in the summer! The rooms are simple, but very spacious and comfortable with air-conditioning, and I also really appreciated the fact that the beds came with privacy curtains. I had no problems getting my rest everyday (even during afternoons) and I don't really have any specific complaints about the rooms at all.

Location-wise, the guesthouse is conveniently located within walking distances to the city center and the famous Gion district (and many other less-known but equally charming geisha districts). They are also located beside Kiyomizudera, one of the must-visits when one is in Kyoto. The convenient distance allowed me to make a 6am trip to be one of the first few people at the temple...which was definitely a better experience in my opinion - without the school kids on excursions and tourists that will arrive in hordes during the rest of the day. I think walking is one of the best ways to see Kyoto, and staying there allowed me to walk to almost all of the landmarks and explore the city at the same time.

Of course, the best part about this hostel would be the lengths that the staff go to, to make everyone feel welcomed. The friendly staff provided me with great advice on sightseeing and recommendations on dining places (such as where is the best conveyor-belt sushi in town and more). I made many friends here and will strongly recommend this guesthouse for travellers (especially those who are traveling alone) as the experience at this guesthouse is really more than just another space for someone looking for the cheapest bed out there for the night. I felt like I was returning home everyday! Thanks for everything, I'll most definitely be back!

I really loved this place! I found it very inviting and friendly and it had such a great communal atmosphere. Its the perfect place to get to meet new people. On the ground floor there is a bar,, which is the perfect place to start a night out. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Kyoto is very easy to travel around, especially if you have a bike. I found that the Santiago was in a much better locations than the other hostel that i stayed at, very close to the Gion district. Beds were clean and comfy. Showers and toilets were clean and were much newer than other hostels that i stayed at in Kyoto and never really busy. Best place I stayed in on my Japan trip!

I stayed for one night. When I walked up to the door, I was greeted very warmly by the guesthouse staff and a current guest. They helped me with my bags and invited me to join them for drinks after I checked in. It was like coming home after a long trip.
Checking in was very simple. You buy towels and soap if you need for like 1 dollar. The wifi worked. There is also a small lounge area with computers, books, maps, tea/coffee.
The showers on the second floor was not a problem. I think people forget that they are checking into a guesthouse and not a hotel/resort. Walking downstairs to take a shower was just fine. I found it convenient that there we're extra WCs outside the dorm rooms.
The bunkbed style dorm room was comfortable. There even was a outlet and night light in each bunk. People were quiet and considerate. No noise.
Downstairs is the bar and cafe. I had spaghetti. It was delicious. You can sit downstairs and listen to some great music which was always playing in the bar area. Also, pottery available for sale.
From Kyoto station you take the bus to get there. Very easy. All stops are announced and displayed in English. Location is right across from a temple. And a pottery store nearby.
I would stay here again.

I was impressed by the kindness of the employees. It's a really nice, comfortable, cozy, clean and cheap place to stay. They have an amount of useful maps in a common area and the food is delicious!! It's no so far from the Kyoto station, so the location is really convenient, also because there's lots of temples to visit by walking.

The location is only good for visiting the nearby temple. There are no avordable restaurants on walking distance, so you are forced to take a bus (220 yen oneway). Other hostels are on good loactions.

The are only 4 showers on all guests, so they are dirty if you are not awaik early. All showers are on the first floor, the rooms upstairs.

The staff if not nice. Only bussy selling discount vouchers for the bar downstairs. However i have seen no single customer there.

Common area is ok.

The dorm rooms are great. Comfortable beds, strong a/c. Curtains around the beds provide lots of privacy. Even though there are WC's on each floor, there are only four showers for the entire hostel, and they're only located on the 2nd floor. Dorm rooms are on 3rd and 4th floors. That makes taking a shower a huge pain. Plus the WC's have tiny sinks over the toilets that are awkward for hand washing, which leads me to think that guests don't generally wash their hands after using the toilet. Yuck. Also, there's no kitchen or fridge, so this isn't your typical backpacker hostel.
