We first tried Ichiran in Tokyo and were surprised to find it in Kyoto. Same delicious ramen, a must try!

“A must-try in Japan”
Reviewed August 11, 2014

In my opinion, Ichiran is second to none when it comes to the best ramen in Japan. There are branches all around the country but if you visit Kyoto, the Shijogawaramachi branch may be the most convenient to you as it's located in a shopping area near Gion.

Entering the restaurant, you are required buy a ticket from a vending machine. At that moment, you have to decide on the quantity of ramen and side dishes you would like to try. Subsequently, you will be led to a booth where you are supposed to enjoy the food individually. A cordial waiter will give you an order form in which you can choose the texture of the ramen, thickness of the soup, amount of hot sauce, etc. Don't be turned down at this point if you are not a lonely patron. The partition of each booth can be removed, so you can still chat with your friends while eating. Drinking all the soup is a gesture of courtesy but it's still ok not to do so as it can be quite salty.

“Best. Ramen. Ever.”
Reviewed December 21, 2013

We spent three weeks in Japan and as a result, ate quite a lot of Ramen. This was our favorite by far!!!
You order the ramen in advance on a machine and can choose extras like refills, extra noodles, extra meat and more. After you're shown to a booth, you get a form to fill out where you customize your selection: how much hot sauce, how much garlic, etc.
And the result is just the BEST RAMEN EVER. The first time we were there it was a cold rainy day, and a weekend, and teenagers were lining up around the block for it. So naturally, we joined the line without having the slightest idea what to expect. The second time there was no line at all, but the food was still outstanding. We miss you, delicious cheap ramen-place.

“Best ramen noodles ever”
Reviewed April 14, 2013

I had the best ramen noodles in Japan here. Restaurant its near by shopping arcade and market in Kyoto. The concept its simple, at the entrance, there is a machine on which you pay your ramen's bowl (aprox. 8 USD). You have select your free cabin to eat. Then a waiter will give you a paper to select your preferred ramen base in the type of noodles, fat, level of spices and pork or chicken. You have water for free in your own fountain.
