Hands down, great meal, great service, great experience. I'm drooling just recalling the meal.

Right down the street from the castle and relatively close to hotels like the ANA-Crown Plaza, is this hidden gem of Mexican food! We wanted to mix it up a little as we'd been eating local Japanese food for most of our trip. We were incredibly surprised and genuinely thrilled at the quality of Mexican food and flavors at La Jolla and thrilled at the great service. It's a small restaurant (12person total seating) and as a group of 6, it was definitely good that we called ahead to make a reservation. If you're looking for some authentic flavors (with a variety of entree choices including taco varieties, hot sauce choices and beverage choices), this is definitely the place for you. The California Avocado salad was also exceptionally fresh and memorable!

Well done, La Jolla!

Been living in Kyoto for 16 years and I am never disappointed by the food! Love Kai's mix of Mexican and Californian food served in Kyoto style!

I am a Kyoto resident and have eaten at La Jolla for about ten years. I have never been disappointed once. The food is tasty and the ingredients are fresh. The owner runs the place on his own so you can't expect the fastest service in the world. The restaurant is indeed small, but you are in Japan after all and space is at a premium here. If you are expecting 100% authentic Mexican food, perhaps it is best to go to Mexico - but La Jolla is the best Mexican-California style food you'll find in Japan.

After visiting Kyoto several times, this restaurant never fails to please. A tiny place near Nijo castle that serves wonderful food at great prices, good drinks, great music and amazing service. I've recommended this place to numerous friends who have also visited for dinner and loved it. A very friendly and helpful waiter and chef (only 2 guys run the place) who really know what works. Be sure to look up the address to show a cab driver as it's a bit hard to find but so worth the trip. If only they had a place in Tokyo.. I can't recommend it highly enough!!

I did not have high expectations of this place although the reviews on tripadvisor are mostly very positive. I had never been to a Mexican restaurant in Japan before and feared it might not be very good. Fortunately, the food was very good and they serve Negra Modelo (beer).

The restaurant is easy to find, just look at the map on the restaurant website (the location on the tripadvisor map is off by one alley). There is a sign in English ouside (rare in Kyoto). Once inside, you can easily imagine being in a small Mexican restaurant in San Diego, Yes, service was on the slow side as noted by the previous reviewer. The food is fresh so they need some time to prepare it while you are enjoying your drink and chat with your dinner companion. The food tastes very good and is definitely better than your average Mexican restaurant in the US. The server and cook speak English very well and were very kind.

Please note that the restaurant is closed for a week until November 7, 2013 (see their website).
