“Gion Fukuzumi is delightful”
Reviewed September 8, 2013

My wife and I stayed at the Gion Fukuzumi for two nights. We opted for one of their traditional rooms, which had no bed. Instead, the room was cleared of furniture and futons were placed on the floor each night. I have to admit the futons were not the most comfortable sleeping accommodation, but they were authentic, and we were hoping to experience authentic.

The hotel serves a traditional Japanese meal in the room at dinner time. It was a multi course extravaganza, and was entirely different each night, except for the ubiquitous sticky rice. Dinner is served on a low table, and the diners sit on little legless chairs on the floor. The server was this incredibly nice kimono clad lady, who did her best to explain to us what we needed to do to consume the foods. The food itself was fresh, delicious, and beautiful.

Breakfast was served in a common room on the second floor, at conventional tables. This breakfast was actually very similar to dinner, except there was smoked or dried fish instead of raw. This was not a bacon and eggs breakfast, or corn flakes and milk! It was different (for us Americans), and delicious.

The hotel had two traditional public baths one for men and one for women. The gender of each bath alternated twice each day, so everybody gets to experience both baths. We were there at a hot and humid time of year, so after a day of looking at shrines or temples, I was ready for a bath. I took one in the morning too, just because. We liked the bath on the sixth floor better than the one on the first floor because the upper one had a view or was at least illuminated with natural light from outside.

The staff was uniformly delightful, from the front desk staff to our servers and room set-up personnel.

The building itself is not particularly interesting. It's just a six story building with a bunch of rooms in it. Some of those rooms are set up as traditional ryokan rooms and we stayed in one of those.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay, and we'd stay there again, but next time we'll opt for a western style room with a western bed.

Loved the location. Service was wonderful. Very clean and comfortable. Friendly service.
Try the traditional Japanese breakfast. The staff are really wonderful and friendly.
We were fortunate to have a Japanese speaker with us. Do not know how much English was available.

The position of the Ryokan is very good. We stayed here (me and husband) with our 6 years old son. While the furniture seems not brand new it was all very clean. For a trip to Japan you have to try this experience, tea served in room by a Japanese lady on arrival and dinner served again in your room. They kindly offered a more Western dinner for our child; it could have been impossible for him to eat what me and husband ate, very traditionally Japanese. Also for breakfast in the morning me and my child had the opportunity to eat a Western meal. We did not visit the public baths, as we had to stay separate (one is for men and the other for women). The staff were very friendly and helpful; they gave us directions to visit the city and called a taxi when we had to leave

What a wonderful place to stay! The staff were very polite and helpful and went out of their way to make us feel welcomed. The food (dinner and breakfast) was excellent too. The room we had was clean and spacious by Japanese standards. The owner's wife even came up to our room to welcome and thank us for choosing to stay with them. The location was perfect for exploring Kyoto and all its lovely sights. At night too, there was so much to do - walking the pretty streets and alleys of Gion, having traditional Kyoto sushi at Isuju sushi (just round the corner from Gion Fukuzumi), ice-cream and coffee. This place is a walkable distance from Pontocho and Nishiki Market as well (and serviced by a lot of buses). It is not too far from the start of the Philosopher's Walk (to the north) and is also positioned ideally for an exploration of the pretty alleyways and temple and shrines which lead to Kiyomizudera Temple (to its south).

As an aside, I highly recommend using the carry service at Kyoto Station to get your luggage delivered to your accommodation (we sent our bags on to the second place we were staying and used an overnight bag for our first night at Kurama Onsen).

Very Comfortable hotel (as with most Jap accom, small compared to western). We had a great time hear, lovely staff (even for Japaneses!! ) and in a great central location!
You are smack in the middle of the historical area and are bound to see Geisha on the streets (early evening mostly). Close to major train stations and bus routes. Excellent for anyone !!
Give the onsen a good work out, dont be shy.

If you are prudish..... be mindful the "porn"area is just around the corner. But please don't be scared off as we are talking about Japan here were there is next to no crime. Any reference for porn or [--] bars is so well concealed and could very easily go noticed by kids....they are called "Snack Bars" so be careful if you think your just getting a quick bite to eat LOLOLOLOL!! Its not until post 12/1am that u will see some skimpy dressed girls (or boys for that matter) out front of the snack bars farewelling their guest or patron.

For first time visitors to Japan we wanted to experience a traditional ryokan specifically in the Gion district of Kyoto. Ryokan Gion Fukuzumi was the perfect place. At the very edge of the Geisha district near Higashiyama St and just steps away from the heart of old Gion with all its ancient narrow streets, canals, shops and best of all you get to see Geisha up close and personal. This is an older facility but very clean. The owners and staff are some of the most helpful and kind people we encountered on our visit. There are public baths as well but we didn't get to use them. One very nice thing is that there is no curfew here and that worked for us because we were out very late on occasion.

  • Liked — Attention to detail and the experience of a traditional inn.
  • Disliked — Sometimes got very hot in our room.
