Kyoto Tower Hotel
Ranked #72 of 376 Hotels / Ryokan in Kyoto

This is an old hotel but it has been refurbished so the rooms are now very good. It is situated opposite Kyoto Station. We chose a large room with twin beds. Costs a little more but worth it for the extra space. Beds were comfortable.
Our stay included free tickets for the 131 metre high Kyoto Tower which has a great view from the top. Entrance to the tower is in the same building.
We would definately consider using this hotel again.

This hotel is just oppose Kyoto Station. There is a large underground shopping mall connecting the station and commercial building nearby including Tower Hotel. During Typhoon Talis period, I actually access to shops and resturants without go to streets level.

A nice hotel that was very spacious. Our triple room had 3 beds a fair distance apart, a lounge, desk, TV, mini-fridge, and a cosy bathroom. The hotel is straight across the road from the Kyoto central station. You can't miss it. It's about a 1 minute walk away.

The beds were comfy, the bathroom was well equipped, the staff were very friendly and the location was very handy. We were also given free passes to head up Kyoto Tower for a 360 degree view around the city - a pretty cool lookout!

On the last day they did start renovations at about 9am - a bit early for some, but we were up and about so it didn't bother us.

Overall, a decent hotel in a very handy location. I would stay here again!

Even by the standard of Japanese hotel rooms, the rooms here are tiny – uncomfortably so. If all you want to do in the room is sleep and shower then you are OK. Anything else – i.e working at a desk is impossible. This generated some unexpected humour, i.e there is a mirror located on a wall in which it is impossible to see one’s reflection unless you bend over double!
The room itself was fine, very clean and reasonably well presented, but the décor in the common areas is very tired.

The hotel is well situated being about 2 minutes walk from the main railway station. The costs are reasonable. The staff are friendly and try to be helpful.

The hotel itself is not especially set up for Western visitors, i.e there is only in room capacity to make green tea, not coffee. The ‘Information for Guests’ booklet is pretty useless. I only discovered the (free) internet access (and provided cable) by accident. The television only shows Japanese stations etc. Also, overseas visitors beware, the rooms only have 2 pin powerpoints, so if you don’t have the right adaptor you could be in trouble.

This hotel is across the railway station, which makes it a perfect location if you want to travel bij train, bus, metro or taxi. Nearby are shops and the post-office where the moneymachine accepts maestro cards.
In walking distance are two Buddist temples. It is possible to walk in the top of the railway station. One must do that the sight is very good.
The hotel has a tower, which you can visit as a guest free of charge. One gets a ticket at the reception.

Room Tip: The sigyt from the floors at the topfloor is very good.

This hotel is directly across the street from Kyoto Station (buses, subway, trains, bullet train). The rooms are of a good size for a Japanese hotel (rooms are smaller here than North America). Fridge, tea-making, TV (in Japanese only; anime/manga programs are fun in any language) all work. The hotel rooms are clean. It is a quiet hotel. Breakfast seems overpriced; a Starbuck's is right beside the hotel. Staff is friendly, not especially conversant in English but you can make yourself understood. There is a bar in the hotel and cold drink machines with soft drinks, juice, water and beer on every floor.
Very easy to get to places of interest in Kyoto from this location; no need for a taxi which can be expensive. And... you never have trouble finding the hotel; just look up - it has a huge tower, can't miss it!
Kyoto Station is a nine storey building with shops, restaurants, Tourist Info Office with internet available and a performance hall. Very convenient to stay next to it.

We have by now stayed in quite a few hotels in Japan within the price range 7000-15000Yen. This hotel is top of that range and it is interesting to compare it with, for example, a double room for 11800Yen in the Super Lohas Hotel at Nara, 45mins down the line from Kyoto, where I am currently writing this review. For paying 3200Yen more at the Tower you get a free ticket to go up the tower observatory (worth 1500Yen), a bigger, better shower, better check-in hours (13.00 until 11.00 as opposed to 10.00 to 15.00 in Nara), a separate drinking water tap, an older building in less good repair, no breakfast, no free foreign TV channels, no onsen, a less comfortable bed, and no pre-heated toilet seat. You pay you money and you take your choice.
My advice, for what it is worth? Perhaps spend more time based in little Nara than big Kyoto. If on a rail pass, use the JR bus (stop 3 at Kyoto station) to visit the golden pavilion (Kinkaku-ji) and nearby Ryoan-ji (get a bus timetable in English from the tourist info centre in the station).
