“Nice place to stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 18, 2013

We spent a night in this ryokan. Such a great experience. The room is clean and the bath is nice. The location is the best as you can walk to the market and malls with in 5 mins.
Recommended. (there in no wifi in the room only in the lobby area but it was acceptable to us).

Thank you for your staying at our WATAZEN RYOKAN.
Since we are in the heart of the city, it is convenient to go anywhere.
The shopping area is near immediately, too.
You can walk the historic area called Gion, too.
We look forward to your next visit.
Thank you very much.

A wonderful place to stay, great location. The hosts were very welcoming and helpful. Gave us restaurant recommendations every night and they were all delicious. You HAVE to go to Ganko sushi, the salmon nigiri & fatty tuna is to die for. Room was spacious, very clean. The onsen baths downstairs were lovely after a long day walking around the city. Would stay here again if I went back to Kyoto!!

This was our first night in a traditional Japanese ryokan, so we didn't have much of a basis for comparison. But we loved Watazen. The staff members were friendly, the traditional Japanese breakfasts were tasty (and filling) and we absolutely loved the hot baths, which weren't exactly "onsens" because they were indoors, but were relaxing nonetheless. The futons we slept on were comfortable, and enjoyed a daily tea time ritual in the room. I can't give this five stars because the Wi-Fi doesn't extend beyond the downstairs lobby -- if you're going to offer Wi-Fi, at least offer it in rooms, as well -- and once we were out and about in Kyoto we did notice more centrally-located ryokans that were closer to shrines, restaurants and shops. Otherwise, the Watazen gets my four stars and confident recommendation.

This place is a traditional Japanese hotel with excellent food and public bath. All the staff are friendly and helpful while the rooms are comfortable and clean. The location is right in the centre of Kyoto and near a metro station and famous Nishiki market. Good value at the price.

We were 3 friends. It was very nice sleep in futon, quite comfortable and we really enjoyed an exquisite dinner, served in our room by our personal maid as per tradition. Food was excellent and rich, service was faultless and kind. The room was bigger than expected even if without any wardrobe for clothes (it was occupied by the futons). The staff was friendly and able to speak English. Several amenities were available in the room as well as tea and water. Breakfast was served in a common room and enjoyable too, again rich and various. The only negative points were that air-conditioned system didn't work very well (but we were lucky as there was not too much heat in March) and room was enlighted by fire leds - hard to sleep for people who desire total dark. All in all however a very positive experience!

Room Tip: Don't worry if you have several bags as rooms are larger than the average in Japan hotels.

Watazen is a tastefully designed traditional ryokan in a great location only steps away from Nishiki markets. Spotlessly clean throughout. The room is lovely... Great decor good size and very comfortable bedding. The traditional Japanese gowns were a nice touch. Room had a slightly strong smell of the tatami straw but it was not offensive. The onsen was an absolute highlight. We took great pleasure in using it every morning and every night.
However, by far the standout feature was th e length that every single staff member went to to ensure that our needs were cared for. It didn't matter what we asked for, every effort was made to please. Great restaurant recommendations were given. our activities for Kyoto were carefully selected and detailed access instructions were given. Our bus tickets to next destination were booked and purchased for us (this was a complicated process that took an hour bc the ticket office was closed, but the staff persisted until our arrangements were sorted). we were made to feel so looked after it was amazing.
Perhaps the only slight drawback... we decided not to have breakfast bc the photos shown to us of the menu were not very appealing. but who knows it may have ended up being good. Highly recommend this place.

Stayed here for a few nights in Jan 2013 (5 people). A really nice hotel with a western edge and ryokan style rooms. Great location near the large malls of Kyoto and not far to Gion. If you want to get around, Watazen hires bikes for quite low costs (I think it was about $10 AUD for me). There are heaps of restaurants both in the local area and on the Gion side of the river. Try looking around the little in-set alley style ones nearby Watazen, we found a couple to be excellent (the best meals I had in Japan).

Lobby is fairly western with concierge desk (24/7 I think), lounge area with free wifi, and brochures and a little shop. Staff are more than friendly and if the person on the desk doesn't speak English they will find someone who does (there is always someone). On the ground level also is the dining room where meals are served. Basic breakfast is included (a little continental with croissants, normal stuff), or you can order a more Japanese style breakfast, which I thoroughly recommend as you get to cook your own fish and enjoy a good selection of traditional Japanese cuisine. You can also buy a dinner, however it is quite expensive and the local restaurants are probably a little value for money (though I didn't have Watazen's dinner so I can't be sure).

The room we had was excellent. Sleeps 6 in the main area, with mats that are stored away by staff during the day (or while you eat breakfast) and brought back out at night. During the day they are replaced by a small table and cushions on the tatami matting. Also included were a small onsen style washroom, toilet, safe, bar fridge and small table and chairs. There is plenty of storage space and room to move around. Watazen also includes a large bath in the basement and laundry facilities.

I would thoroughly recommend this place, it is a great way to experience a Ryokan and the staff are more than helpful (the usual impeccable Japanese service once again). Together with its location and food, Watazen is more than worth a look.
