The place is in a residential neighborhood which gives the feel of what and how Japanese people (without tourists). The hospitality & cleanliness are impeccable. We got in a bit late and they still served us tea. The service that came next just reflected their thoughtfulness and their attentiveness. Our friend is not able to sit on the tatami mat because of arthritis limiting knee motion and the staff recognized the problem. She came back and told us that the breakfast would be served downstairs so our friend could comfortably sit on a chair rather than on the tatami mat. What a treat! The room is next to a small but peaceful and lovely garden, befitting of Japanese simple yet charming style. We had a great breakfast with a great view (to us this small garden epitomizes one of many Japanese cultures). The breakfast itself was filled with many different varieties and filled us up all the way beyond lunch. Their baths also are very clean and, perhaps, better seeing first-hand than from the pictures from the Tripadvisor. It is clean and not old like in the picture. Very traditional. Although we had to share bathrooms, they are very clean. We also got a chance to stroll around a lovely and traditional Japanese neighborhood, the park, seeing people getting up early tending their streets and homes. Upon our departure, the staff stood in front of the ryokan, patiently waving at us all the way until we had to turn off their street. This is a great place to experience Japanese life: home, food, and neighborhood. We would defnitiely come back and stay longer at Ryokan Montonago again.

Staying in a Ryokan is something that you have to do (at some time) when visiting Japan. Theres no better place to do it than in Kyoto and I'm not aware of any better Ryokan than Motonago. My family had a wonderful stay for 3 nights in July - the weather was extremely hot but the hospitality and service was exemplary. Make sure that you have dinner with them on at least one night and be adventurous with the traditional Japanese breakfast. Be aware that it is quite an expensive accommodation solution and I think that 2 nights was probably enough (to immerse yourself in something so totally different to the normal western 5 star hotel) but I certainly recommend Motonago very highly.

We travelled with two adults and three kids (4,7,9yold). The ryokan was pristine with amazing service and outstanding food. All the staff went above and beyond. The kids enjoyed the onsen and the tatami room. Walking distance to the Main Streets and excellent location near some very interesting shrines.

Overall a flawless experience. One I would truly recommend to anyone.

We spent our first night at Gion Hatanaka and second night at Motonago. We were so so pleased with Motonago that we wished we had stayed in Motonago for both nights!

- Motonago is located right in the centre of Gion and all the major shrines. Staying here really makes you feel so blend in that its as though you've travelled back time to the old japan 100 years ago. Its truly remarkable.

- The ryokan was simple , clean and charming in its own way. The duvets were thick and fluffy - so comfortable that we overslept!

- Last but not least, the staff and service was impeccable. Everything was dealt with a smile and genuine care towards their customers.

This place is truly a hidden gem if you're looking for an authentic Japanese experience. We cant wait to head back.

Staying at Motonago was a highlight of our trip to Japan. There were six of us, including 2 teenagers, and we all loved it. Definitely do the dinner and Japanese breakfast. They were both delicious. The staff was very welcoming -- the whole experience was serene.
