Samurai Kembu is a hoot. Organised by some very passionate lads who are very obliging. Great change from sightseeing, particularly if the weather is not so good. Do the dress up- might as well. You can take it as seriously or light heartedly as you like but you'll find yourself having a laugh either at yourself or whoever you are with as it is quite a skill not developed in a short lesson. Nevertheless great information on the Samuari and their significance past and present and I'm keen to read up more. Be prepared for a train ride from Kyoto station (pick up by representative) and travels for two stops, then collected by van to the Samuari Kembu venue.

My family of four (2 kids and 2 adults) booked for the full scale lesson and costumes in January 2014. It was extremely well organised and the instructor (I don't know his name) was terrific. It was such a fun experience, though also very difficult to do and made us really appreciate the physical and well as spiritual side of the samurai. Lovely people, great place, if you want to do something different in Kyoto book this, my kids loved it!

If you're sick of the typical temple & shrine tours in Kyoto, then this is the experience for you. I did the full 3 hours samurai experience and thought it was the highlight of my trip. Originally I thought it was going to be easy because I already had years of martial arts experience, but it was surprisingly hard. Ryu (our sensei for the day) was a great teacher and though seems like a casual person off-field, but when teaching & performing, he is very serious. Overall I thought this experience was definitely worth while and would highly recommend it.

Love this place. Got a dream of being a hitokiri or "Bleach" Shinigami come to this place. You need to go some training to perform the samurai dance. The katana is heavy.

I say dress up because between watching a video and getting clothed in your choice of outfit there isn't a great deal taught about the history of samurai. However, saying that it is a lovely 2-3 hours (if you choose the full dress up lesson), you can work up a minor sweat (minor) and if you go with someone (I strongly recommend you do or you won't get the whole show and tell experience) then you'll have lots of pictures to show off to friends and family. Oh and by the way you don't have to do the dressing up it's done for you by the young man who takes you through the lesson. The young man finishes with a demonstration of sword and fan and if you haven't seen something similar it's quite a spectical (worth seeing). Enjoy:)
