“Not worth, given the location”
Reviewed August 24, 2013 via mobile

Fabulous garden and free entrance, but the heat is terrible, like in all other temples and villas around Kyoto. I would not go during summer, as it's not convenient to reach.

“Worth the extra effort”
Reviewed July 31, 2013

I'm not sure we could have done this without the help of our guide as it required prior booking with passport details but it was well worth it and the audio guide was excellent. Even in the rain the one hour tour was great. Make the effort if you can!

“One of the loveliest spots in Japan”
Reviewed June 16, 2013

Anyone interested in gardens and architecture should make sure to make an appointment and visit this villa. There is an hour guided tour (in Japanese, but there is an English audio guide). This is a very special place, but you have to make a reservation with the Imperial Household Agency, which really requires having someone in Japan get a reservation for you. The villa has some of the finest traditional Japanese architecture.

“imperial indeed”
Reviewed March 28, 2013

you can imagine how Arts & Crafts architects were inspired, how Frank lLloyd Wright traveled here and applied some of the articulate design element to the Imperial Hotel he would later build...

Location is not eay however, just walk over and you'll,sample the sights, sounds and scents of this great city.

“Placid scenic garden beauty.”
Reviewed March 23, 2013

Can be a challenge touring because of its isolated location in SW Kyoto, not near public transportation, requires a taxi or driver. But the huge and varied garden is magnificent and the buildings are Zen beauty. Simply perfect garden design.
