Owner description: The most famous neighborhood in Kyoto is also known as the Geisha district. It is here, among the teahouses and private clubs that you can catch a glimpse of a geisha in full dress including white makeup.

Wander around the back alleys, do some Geisha spotting amongst the overly aggressive photographers, just take in the energy of the place

We had one very brief glimpse of a geisha. She exited a taxi and quickly walked into a building. The rest of the district was nice, but it was actually a little hard to find a place to eat that was open to the public.

I saw several geish while I was wandering the streets which made my visit to Gion complete. There wasn't a whole lot to do there but it is well worth the visit to the famous Geish district!

Worth it, but get your expectations realistic. This is not Disney Land.
Picturesque traditional architecture, although often a mix with plainer urban environment. I enjoyed strolling the side streets. Very clean. Felt safe.
Still a living district, despite the downturn of the geiko business. Most geiko houses were turned into old traditional restaurants, private houses, tea houses or shops.
By the way, in Kyoto, you are not welcome to use the word geisha, associated with ‘onsen geishas’, that is associated with services that are closer to prostitution. The real professional geisha is supposed to be the guardian of the Arts, without possibility of purchasing sexual services. So, in Kyoto, they say geiko for the fully trained one, and maiko for the trainee (15 to 20 years old, usualy).
Saw a geiko on the street. She was hurrying. I hope the reason why she was hurrying was not avoidance of geisha-hunters with their camera. A saddening thought. People need to be decent and respectful.
Attended a private dinner with a geiko. Extremely expensive. Was part of a package sold to me by an agency. Upon questioning, found out only many days after, the cost of that. Amazing. But that night was pleasant for sure, with the geiko and her musician very nice, eager to answer questions. They performed dance and music.
I stopped randomly at a restaurant, with only signs in Japanese from the outside. An English menu was available inside, and I found out it was a noodle shop. Staff was very friendly. Food was very good. Reasonable price, but this was not a touristy place, was meant for locals, and was unpretentious. Still, a very good experience, felt authentic.
Found a very nice paper and print shop. Nice items, reasonably priced. From the counter, the back shop could be seen, with all the expected tools of the trade. Good to know that they make the products on site.
A special experience. A must do if interested by historical Japan.
