Owner description: The most famous neighborhood in Kyoto is also known as the Geisha district. It is here, among the teahouses and private clubs that you can catch a glimpse of a geisha in full dress including white makeup.

“Geisha area and tearoom”
Reviewed October 1, 2012

Loved the shopping in Kyoto and the teahouse and geisha area. The orange fencing in Gion is a big favorite.

“A must do a Kyoto!”
Reviewed October 1, 2012

Excellent area for photos, restaurants, bars. or just walking around... Must do!
Kyoto City Tourism associations offers walking tour at night to see Geishas.
Look for the lanterns on roof tops: it means there is a beer garden open (all you can drink/eat)

“A real sense of old japan”
Reviewed September 27, 2012

I loved walking around Gion. The main street is full of people trying to get a glimpse of a Geisha and chasing after them with cameras (it was similar to watching papparazzi with a celebrity). However we spent our time there strolling in the back streets, which are small, lined with beautiful old buildings and full of character and charm.
We were very lucky to see 3 Geisha. We just silently watched them as they glided from one house to another, an absolute delight to observe!

“Amazing breathtaking old-style Japanese structures”
Reviewed September 25, 2012

Walking along the streets of Gion one literally holds in their breath. Its very quiet and almost creepy because you wont see any one else walking its quaint cobbled stone streets. Gion is one of Kyoto's most famous Geiko districts. The streets are very clean. Each house you will pass will either be home to geiko's, a cold confection bar, a kaiseki restaurant even a karaoke place. Surprisingly, inside the buildings it's very alive and happening while a quick step outside will bring you back to peace and quiet. Very twilight zone-ish experience. Although we didn't encounter geiko's while traversing its maze like streets, we did pass by two of them on our cab back to the Kyoto station. Our guide pointed them out to us and said they were true geiko's because of their posture among other characteristics she mentioned that I have forgotten. While there take in the traditional architecture. It really is breathtaking. One must not miss a visit to Gion

“This city and this area must not be missed!”
Reviewed September 24, 2012

Walking around in the Gion area of Kyoto was like travelling back in time. Beautiful old houses, narrow alleys, amazing gardens behind the walls and lots of beautiful colourful geishas walking around in the area. My favorite place in Japan!
