“Amazing temple - not your usual run of the mill one.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 21, 2014

This is quite a low key attraction as far as its marketing goes - but is astonishing to see. Over a thousand Buddha statues arranged in a long hall, all gilded with intricate decoration. A must-see in my opinion. Leave your camera in a locker outside though.

“A must see in Kyoto!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 19, 2014

An amazing place of religious art. Do not miss this. Expect to be amazed at what you see here. Highly recommended. A 5 min bus ride from Kyoto Station. Clearly signed bus goes to the door from Kyoto Station.

“No photos!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 14, 2014

It is a very authentic experience to see the 100s of guardian statues protecting the budda. Monks are actively worshipping and the smell of incense is amazing. Don't expect to take any photos though.

The hours are kind-of fishy, so plan accordingly

“Breathtaking”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 13, 2014

I am shocked at how many negative reviews this has received. There is nothing like being in a hall with 1000 (yes, literally, a thousand) carved statues. It is almost overwhelming. My wife and I saw this near the end of our time in Kyoto and marveled at scope of it. I appreciated the fact that there was no photography allowed and in no way felt that it detracted from my experience; in fact, I think that it added to it. Make sure you have a little time to walk through slowly and appreciate what there is to see, because there is really nothing quite like it.

“nothing like it!”

the 1000 Buddha room is stunning. There is nothing else like it! Amazing. It is hard to describe the feeling you get when you turn the corner and see the Buddhas. You must go here!
