Owner description: Originally named Rengeoin Temple, this site has taken on the name of the great hall within which houses 1001 life-sized, wooden statues of Kannon, the goddess of mercy.

Lots of nearly-same looking figures in a dark hall. We got bored by the statues. It's dark inside and you are not allowed to take pictures.

Loved it, loved it, loved it.

The Sanjusangendo is not highly promoted I found, but I would have to say it's the most stunning and enriching temple in Kyoto.

The building itself is rather ordinary, but once you reach inside to find the 1000 life-size bronzed statues, it is totally awe-inspiring.

Located inside the longest wooden structure in Japan, 500 goddesses of mercy stand before you in rows of 10. Walk along a bit further, and the giant statue is in the centre followed by another 500 goddesses on the other side.

An amazing and beautiful temple.

This is an often overlooked temple by tour guides and visitors.. Unlike some of the others on TA, is is not crowded so you can really experience the sacredness of it. Very moving.

We were aiming to visit the nearby museum but much was closed so we went across to the temple and were really glad to have one this visit. A huge lengthy building that houses 1001 statues although didn't count them its very impressive. A must do site in Kyoto!
