Owner description: This world heritage site was the home of Tokugawa leyasu, one of the most powerful men in Japan. The castle was built as a residence and not for defense purposes. However, to protect the shogun from enemies, special creaky floorboards were installed to warn of anyone approaching.

“Looking about shabby”
Reviewed November 9, 2013

The City manages the castle, and not very well. Admission is very good value and they could hike the entry fee by ¥100 and spend it on the building. Even clearing the dust and cobwebs would help.

The gardens are superb, though.

As with so many audio tours in Japan, this one is very poor and certainly not worth the money

“Absolutely superb castle”
Reviewed November 8, 2013

Walking through the corridors and looking into the various rooms, I felt transported back to the time of the Shogunate. The rooms were well labelled and are still so original it was easy to imagine the goings on 400+ years ago. The interior walls are still decorated with their original 17th century murals.
Walking on the squeaking "Nightingale Floorboards" was a highlight. The castle and palace are surrounded by a moat and beautifully built stone walls. The gardens are also quite beautiful.
Wished I could have taken some photos inside but unfortunately it is forbidden.

“Nightingale floors”
Reviewed November 7, 2013

Really enjoyed our visit here. Highly recommend. And the creaking floors really do sound like nightingales! This was also one of the only Kyoto sites that we found to be totally wheelchair friendly.

“Cultural experience”
Reviewed November 5, 2013 via mobile

Nijo Castle was right across the street from our hotel so we had a great view of it! It is ancient & very Japanese style! You need to remove your shoes to walk inside the interior on tatami maps to see how life was during that era! The grounds have Japanese landscaping & ponds!

“So cool”
Reviewed November 4, 2013

We had a private tour guide for the day and this was one of our stops. It was amazing, was once the home of shoguns and no photographs are allowed inside, just outside of the gardens. The inside was stunning and I can't even describe it, you have to see it. Highly recommend.
