Owner description: This world heritage site was the home of Tokugawa leyasu, one of the most powerful men in Japan. The castle was built as a residence and not for defense purposes. However, to protect the shogun from enemies, special creaky floorboards were installed to warn of anyone approaching.

“Old Style Castle”

It is a nice diversion to see a traditionally built structures that are not a shrine or a temple. The grounds are expansive with a nice garden. It was across the street from our hotel, so we went there twice.

“worth the visit”
Reviewed February 24, 2013

It was unbearably hot the day we visited the castle but going inside the actual castle was much cooler. I loved the nightingale floors that 'sing' while you walk on them. It was very interesting! The grounds are beautiful and the moats surrounding it are filled with carp.

I visited Nijo Castle during an arranged tour. It is really beautiful and wonderfully preserved. Well worth the visit. The gardens are also beautiful.

“Castle #1”
Reviewed February 18, 2013

We’ve purchased 1 day tour of Kyoto with JTB Sunrise Central. Arrangement cost almost $1,000 for two of us and includes, lunch, tickets to all 5 sites, bus ride and bullet train tickets Nagoya-Kyoto- Nagoya. It is all day trip from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm and be ready to be tired and also to see a lot
Travel agent was waiting for us in hotel (Marriott) and help us board bullet train. It is short trip, maybe 30-45 minutes and once in Kyoto they will wait for you and take you to the bus. Guide is very knowledgeable and helpful and that day we’ve managed to visit this Castel among other sites. What an amazing place and architecture. You will love it

“Massive complex with palace attached”
Reviewed February 16, 2013 via mobile

Very interesting palace, although a bit plain inside as there isn't any furniture (they didn't use furniture, it's not that they've lost it), nice paintings and great carvings. Moved on next door to the castle which was very impressive, the whole grounds included some beautiful gardens as well, it was one of my favourite bits of Kyoto and makes a welcome break from temples! Entry fee was 600 which was steep, we got bus 101 from Kyoto station which was quick and easy.
