Owner description: This world heritage site was the home of Tokugawa leyasu, one of the most powerful men in Japan. The castle was built as a residence and not for defense purposes. However, to protect the shogun from enemies, special creaky floorboards were installed to warn of anyone approaching.

“A great way to spend the afternoon.”
Reviewed November 13, 2012

I absolutely loved Nijo Castle. A stark contrast with subtle similarities of castles in the West, this gorgeous example of all good things Japan is absolutely stunning on the inside and out. History buffs and beautiful-gardens-enthusiasts should be in for an afternoon well spent.

“Great gardens and interesting castle”
Reviewed November 12, 2012

The castle is impressive, but the grounds are even nicer. It was not crowded, especially compared to some of the other sites in Kyoto.

“Only the Ninomaru Palace is open,”
Reviewed November 10, 2012

but it is worth the visit nonetheless - a 17th century wooden structure with beautiful wall paintings and carved and decorated wooden panelling. The gardens outside are beautiful too. The second (later) palace surrounded by a moat is not open to the public but you can climb up the stone fortifications. There were not too many visitors when we went there.

“Beautiful...”
Reviewed November 8, 2012

Take your shoes off and wonder how things were done some time ago... Walking areas were build to imitate some little bird song while people around to hear that... Park and gardens are stunning. Closing at 4pm if I remember well...

“Impressive moat”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

Great looking castle with a moat!
Parking was expensive even for bicycles and they charged a fair amount for entry as well.
