“lovely lacquerwork”
Reviewed June 11, 2013

The whole site is quite beautiful, but the lacquerwork is spectacular. It would be nice if they would let you get closer to it, but even from a distance, it is beautiful.

“Paeaceful Temple”
Reviewed June 4, 2013

Loved the gardens. There are so many temples in this area it is difficult to see all of them, but this one was very good.

We loved it, great place to visit.....bit hard for non Japanese people to understand more about the area. Our highlight was seeing a couple of geisha girls wandering around.....it's worth seeing but would have been better if we knew more about the area

“Nice place”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

It was a pleasure visiting this place. The Kodai-ji temple is a really nice place. The natural beauty around the temple is amazing. The place closes at 5:30 pm and it takes about 2 hours to visit the all the surroundings. If you want to do prayers, you need to take prior appointment from temple authorities.
We found Ashoka pillers, the Indian national emblem in Kodai-ji temple surroundings. It was really nice to know that Ashoka had influence all the way to Japan.

“Nice...”
Reviewed May 7, 2013

Personally, I did not get as much out of this as others may have.
Granted, it is a nice attraction, with nice gardens and even a cool bamboo forest. They let you into an interior where you take your shoes off and that was nice. Then you have the rock garden, which was Ok, but not that impressive. You make your way up the hill to find a shrine, and further up is a cottage. I really thought the view of the cemetery (left side neighbor looking uphill) was the most interesting thing to see. The entrance fee was 600 yen, which I felt was out of proportion, since Kiyomizu (not far) was much more impressive and cost half of that.
In my opinion, there are much better things to see in Kyoto, but perhaps you'll like this one.
