Kodai-ji Temple may not be among the best known attractions in Kyoto but it is in fact its advantage. The place is very quiet and beautiful. It is one of the very few temples in Kyoto where they allow to take photo of interiors. The gardens (both the rock garden and landscaped garden) are beautiful including surrounding grounds (also the bamboo forest). Whole off the beaten track the place is really worth visiting ... maybe more than some more famous tourist attractions. Highly recommended.

I highly recommend to visit night time illuminated autumn leaf and garden. They do night time illumination in Summer time as well but autmun is much more comfortable and wonderful. It was really awesome.

All the historic sites are amidst beautiful grounds. All the temples we visited were beautiful. They are all "functioning" temples, so do not take photos in the halls. All are wonderfully maintained and awe inspiring.

This place is truly spectacular at night-time when it's lit up! I was blown away! It was magical, unforgettable and in my top 2 Japan experiences of all time. I see it as a must do in Kyoto! (see attached pics)

It's not very large and I haven't been there during the day (probably worth visiting during day & night). It's basically a group of smaller temples and buildings located in a truly beautiful garden. You follow the set path around the garden seeing bridges, mirror-like ponds, pebble gardens, city views and the most stunningly lit bamboo forest I've ever seen. Each new thing more stunning than the last.

I went just before closing and was actually ushered out politely (didn't want to leave). It was so peaceful, surreal and quiet. If you like Japanese gardens (who doesn't) and garden lights then you must go! I cannot recommend this highly enough!

FYI, incase you're interested, the other of the top 2 experiences in Japan is the Snow Lantern Festival in Hirosaki.
