Owner description: This most-visited temple in Kyoto was built to honor Kannon, the goddess of mercy. It's beautiful hillside location offers spectacular views of the city and valley below.

Kiyomizu temple is one of the most beautiful sites in Kyoto and whole of Japan. You can see and feel both its inner beauty (temple, its grounds, and a garden) and an amazing view from above. Take your time to stroll around (warning: steep stairs) and enjoy the place.

Yes, it's highly rated. Yes, it's high up and offers fantastic view but I wasn't overly impressed with it. Too many people and too packed. The streets leading up to the temple was packed to death like sardines. But it's sakura season so that can't be avoided. Not my highlight in Kyoto

Visited this in April first week at peak of Sakura season. Beautiful sight outside the temples. Lovely colourful trek of shops to climb uphill to reach there. The temple is nice with a platform to see Tokyo, some natural water streams and a shrine for couples and trivia tests to achieve your dreams. The highlight is a Buddhist zen experience BEFORE the main temple. You go down steps into a Zen Buddist shrine which is pitch dark with just a string of pearls to guide you. STUnNiNg - you are literally groping your way and helpless in ouch darkness. Finally a rat of light as a Buddhist stone and it's rays of light illuminate your life. Make a prayer. oUtStanding metaphors in life

If you are able, wait until the renovations are finished as we barely could see the temple. The view is really good though, and must be especially beautiful in autumn. Temple was also packed with tourists, we were there in the afternoon, maybe suggest that you go early as it opened at 6:30am
