Owner description: This most-visited temple in Kyoto was built to honor Kannon, the goddess of mercy. It's beautiful hillside location offers spectacular views of the city and valley below.

Amazing view once you pass Kiyomizu temple itself and you can see the temple to your right, the view of central kyoto straigh on and the pavillion to your left. Lots of souvenir shops around here too!

It is a very crowded attraction, yet there is a nice view of Kyoto from the area and fairly nice structure on a wooden perch.

Worth a visit.

Up in the hills, nature all around - hydrangeas were in season when I visited. The experience of drinking from the water spring for blessing/luck, seeing the pagoda and several small prayer areas around the place were great. Near the top you can take great pictures of Kyoto city.

We chose to stay at Hanakiya Inn in order for an easy early morning walk to the temple. Excellent decision. Arrived around 7am and didn't leave until 10am. There really is much to see and take in, so plan for at least 3 hours. Good views of the Kyoto skyline from the temple. Visited a cemetery nearby to further understand the Japanese culture. Definitely a highlight of our trip!

The bad news is that this is one of the top must-see temples, so it is always crowded. The good news is a shopping street of traditional, well-made handcrafts & cheezy souvenirs, topped by a temple on a hillside propped up by several stories of wood lattice, almost stilts. Noisy, beautiful, views over the city...
