Owner description: This most-visited temple in Kyoto was built to honor Kannon, the goddess of mercy. It's beautiful hillside location offers spectacular views of the city and valley below.

Heard and read so much about this temple. We were looking forward to see how amazing it is. First the was the long queue to cleanse ourselves before entering the temple with tour groups taking their sweet time taking photos of each other posing at the entrance.

We went during weekday and there was just so many people walking up to the temple and inside the temple. The sad part of it is that this temple felt a little too commercialise. The temple still looked amazing if you can oversee the crowd.

To get to Kiyomizudera we took bus 206 from Kyoto Station for about 20 minutes and got off at Kiyomizu-michi bus stop, from where it is a ten minute uphill walk to the temple. There are markets and shops along the walk well worth a look, helps take your mind of the hill climb. The area was extremely busy with plenty of school children who enjoy having their photos taken with tourists, so don't be surprised if they ask. Entry was 300 yen. The views of Kyoto from the lookout points were excellent. Kiyomizudera is best known for its wooden stage that juts out from its main hall, 13 meters above the hillside below, amazing. Many people visit this temple more then once, we unfortunately were on such a tight schedule after getting rained out the day before that we could only visit once. So glad we managed to fit this in. I think you'd be disappointed if you went to Kyoto and didn't see this temple.

Every school group in Japan seemed to be here the day I visited, but that only added to the excitement around the place.

Well worth a visit, it was busy but that was all part of the experience in a funny way as added to the atmosphere. Nice views from up there also.
