Owner description: This most-visited temple in Kyoto was built to honor Kannon, the goddess of mercy. It's beautiful hillside location offers spectacular views of the city and valley below.

It is my all time favorite in Kyoto with its wood terrace, the beautiful view, the way to it and from it ect etc. Try to go really early or far from weekends and holidays, increases the delight.

Went as they opened and it was lovely and peaceful. When I left two hours later, lots of visitors - less enticing. Go early! Also, lovely cobblestone streets/shops en route to getting there / back.

Go when the sun is in the east, early before the tourists arrive - best for photos. Lovely temple and pagoda.

Worth visiting this temple. But make sure you take a tour guide or a audio guide or guide book. Your visit will be wasted otherwise as it is very important to know the history and significance of the things you are seeing. The tourist treats that you can buy on the walk up to the temple can be bought elsewhere at lower prices

This ticked all the boxes for us as there were lots of nice wooden carved buildings and temples to see, it's still in use so you can see monks performing ceremonies (not for the benefit of the tourists, but you can watch) and local people coming to pray and give offerings (but it doesn't feel intrusive to watch or take photos from a distance). The location is very special and atmospheric and great for photos of the temple on the hillside. Takes 1-2 hours to walk around.
