Owner description: One of Kyoto's most famous attractions, this temple was originally built in 1397 as a residence for shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. The structure was completely covered in gold leaf, earning it the name Golden Pavilion.

“Breathtaking and definitely worth a visit”
Reviewed March 7, 2014

This beautiful gold-clad pavilion is an exact replica of the 500-year old building that a crazy temple priest put on fire back in 1955. We find the location culturally rich and well preserved and it was like stepping back in time. The structure af the building, the pond, the trees and rocks blend so well in the setting. The desing is really a fantastic masterpiece of landscape. It is breathtaking and definitely worth a visit.

“Very beautiful”
Reviewed March 6, 2014 via mobile

The golden pavilion is stunning. Truly golden. Definitely go see when in Kyoto. The garden and surrounding is very nice and well maintained.

The temple is better here then the silver pavilion. But the garden setting at the silver pavilion is better than this one. Either one so worth seeing.

“Late afternoon's the best time”
Reviewed March 5, 2014

A replica of the original structure dating back to the early-15th century, the Golden Pavilion served as the inspiration for the construction of the Silver Pavilion that's located across town in north-eastern Kyoto. Highly recommended as one of the must-see attractions in this town, it's difficult to describe the first time one sees this iconic building glimmering in the sunlight. Located beside a lake and covered in gold leaf from the second floor up, it doesn't get more iconic or postcard pretty than this. We found that that the best time to take photographs was in the late-afternoon when the pavilion faces the setting sun.

A path leads visitors around the grounds and along the way, several collections of statues are arranged whom visitors throw coins at to improve their luck. Generally peaceful, the park does get quite crowded at times. I was also a little disappointed with the stalls that line the path towards the exit as they seemed to not fit in with the general ambience of the park. Exiting the grounds also involves a long flight of shallow steps, not always easy for folks who are wheelchair-bound.

“Must Go, Must See When In Kyoto”
Reviewed March 4, 2014

If you're going to be in Kyoto, then this is a must see in your itinerary. The sight of this temple is purely majestic and the grounds are well-kept. We got there a little after noon, the crowd wasn't too bad. First we went to the Arashiyama Monkey Park and then took the JR (Sagaarashiyama Station) to Hanazono Station and from there took a taxi to Kinkaku-ji for about a 1,070 yen taxi fare.

We saw this beautiful temple - at sunset - with the expert guidance of Mr. Yoshida of Kyoto Limousines - who really brought the entire complex to life. We checked out (and many probably miss) the 600 year old tree sculpted in the shape of a ship. Also, not to be missed is the back of the temple (and many probably miss this view). Interesting fact: please note there are fire extinguisher trap doors on the grounds around the temple. The temple was a trip highlight.
