Owner description: One of Kyoto's most famous attractions, this temple was originally built in 1397 as a residence for shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. The structure was completely covered in gold leaf, earning it the name Golden Pavilion.

Kinkakuji is simply amazing. If you are in Kyoto and do not take the time to see this temple you are missing out. If you can get there early and avoid a crowd it is simply magical!

“Lovely but crowded.”
Reviewed November 6, 2012

Hardly awe inspiring, as the guide books may suggest, but lovely all the same if you can stomach the crowds. There are less well trodden temples and shrines nearby.

“Basked in golden light of old charm shrine”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

Read somewhere that this shrine just has been gone facelift and it shows. That golden color is shining marvelously in daylight sunshine. Beautiful quiet shrine. one of a must visit places in Kyoto.

“Another highlight in Kyoto”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

The golden temple and the gardens are just perfect. We had a really beautiful view - the water of the pond in front of the golden pavilion is absolutly calm and mirror the pavilion perfectly and the leaves of the trees beginn to change their color. If possible you should try to avoid crowds of japanese school classes ....

“Simply stunning”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

If the is a place in Kyoto that will remain in our memory this is it. Immediately after buying the entrance tickes and walking a few feet we turned a corner and there it was: the Golden Pavillion in all its splendor. What a view! No visitor to Kyoto should miss it, even if he has to sacrify other attractions. On a beautiful lake that reflects its fairy-tale presence, and with a series of green wooded hills as background, the Golden Pavilion exceded all our expectations.
