Owner description: Built in 1482 by the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa, this Zen temple was supposed to have been finished in a coat of silver. Although this step never occurred, the temple is still known by the name Silver Pavilion.

This was the first temple we visited in Kyoto and I was surprised by the gardens - huge, perfectly manicured gardens and a large sand garden at the entrance. It was enjoyable to walk through the grounds (you have to follow a set path) and see all the different views. There's a really pretty overlook of Kyoto. The actual temple isn't very impressive and you can't get very close. It was a good first temple to visit.

The gardens were glorious. Busy, but glorious but then this is High Seaon (November) so to be expected. Glad I went.

This is a very picturesque spot, and the balcony certainly gives you a memorable view. Unfortunately, it's also crowded, and hard to enjoy except as a photo opp. I'd definitely recommend seeing it, but then I'd recommend walking to one or more of the other shrines on that side of Kyoto to peacefully enjoy the places.

This must be better than the golden pavilion. Great zen garden and view at the end you can go up the stairs

I really like Ginkaku. The building was not as magnificent as the Kinkaju but the gardens, especially, the sand garden was beautiful. In addition, one can walk through the mosses garden and to a higher point to have a birdeye view of the whole place.

If you are on your own, you can take the bus from Kingaku to Ginkaku; it took 30 min.

You can save a lot with a one day bus/metro pass!!
