This was a beautiful hotel, the rooms were large and exactly what I had hoped for. The lobby was beautiful. Good location to the Gion district. Clearly a favorite of the Japanese as I saw few westerners.

I will stay here the next time I go to Kyoto.

We really enjoyed our four night stay at the Okura. We were pleasantly surprised to be upgraded from a standard twin room to a deluxe corner room which was huge. Very friendly bell hop and reception staff. We thought the hotel breakfast was a bit expensive so opted to eat at the local bakeries instead. The only disappointing thing was that we wanted to have pre-dinner drinks on our final night at the bar on the top floor. Despite the fact it was pretty much empty, we were told that it was "dinner time" (6pm) and so we couldn't just have drinks. This put a real dampener on the evening which was a shame.

In short, we were satisfied with every aspect of our stay at hotel Okura. The breakfast buffet is an amazing spread of Western and Asian fare, with a nice view to go along with it.

The room- by Japanese standards- was better than most, but the service, restaurants (especially), and professionalism were very impressive. The location was a plus as well. You can spend much more on a hotel in Kyoto, but you won't have to if you check out Okura first.

We stayed three nights in a suite. Our room was modern with new electronics and spacious. Beautiful views of Kyoto.

In a prior trip to Kyoto, I had read in envy the reviews about the Kyoto Hotel Okura on Tripadvisor. Little did I know, several years later, that I would end up being one of the many to speak its praises!

We stayed there for 1d/1n as a part of a tour group through Kansai. We were definitely very excited to find out that one of the stops would be at the Hotel Okura and weren't disappointed at all. Perhaps this was part of the tour, but the hotel staff had our luggage loaded up and taken to our rooms even as we were checking in. That reminds me - a great thing about Japan is no tipping! In fact, the Japanese consider it an insult - you are paying them extra for something they ought to be doing as a part of their job.

But I digress. The room was large; everything was clean and immaculate. Our bed was very comfortable and it reminded me of the Westin "Heavenly Bed." Usually, I have a lot of trouble sleeping in a bed that's not my own, but that night I slept like a log (even with jetlag). I was also able to catch up on some business State-side without any difficulties. The internet was free and the LAN cable was provided.

Breakfast buffet was very delicious. You have a choice of western or Japanese-style breakfast, and we chose the latter. Definitely a memorable breakfast. Each morsel seems so small and insignificant, yet at the end of the meal you find yourself completely full and satisfied. It was a very delicious kaiseki breakfast, if there is such a thing.

We were very impressed by the staff. A few of the bellboys and hostesses, who our tour guide said were rumored to be specifically recruited for their good looks, stood outside the lobby and waved at our tourbus until it had left.

This was not the experience we were hoping for in Kyoto. After the amazing Peninsula in Tokyo, perhaps we were expecting too much, but Hotel Okura really did not impress in any way. It's a very average hotel. Really boring cheap-looking decor, really basic amenities, pretty bad service (useless concierge, rude front desk staff - but their motto is "service with a smile" - I don't think so!). They don't have king size beds, so my husband and I had to sleep in separate beds, which was pretty lame (they would not put the beds together, like some hotels do). The place is fine; just nothing nothing wonderful or special at all. It's too expensive for what you get. The location is good, but Kyoto is small so anyplace is easy to get to. I would not stay here again.

Had a wonderful 4 days in Cherry Blossom season. Everyone we met in hotel could not do enough - superb service and wonderfully relaxing to return to after a hectic but lovely walk around the temples and major sights. Given a beautiful corner room, beds were excellent and room spotlessly clean. I loved the origami cranes left on our table ! Don't forget to sample the lovely pastries in the small cafe downstairs. The hotel made our stay in Japan a memorable one - thank you!
