“Can't wait to go back again - brilliant!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 30, 2014

We took this hotel after our requested hotel was booked out on suggestion from our travel agent - best decision we made! The staff were ALL absolutely brilliant, location was sensational and whilst we had 2 singles beds rather than a double the room was amazing. After coming from Tokyo with a tiny hotel room, we just loved this hotel. Every day the concierge would meet and great us, assist with any directions etc.

Room Tip: When you book, request if you want non-smoking and also how many beds (twin or double). Automaticall...

My wife and I stayed at the Okura in July 2013. The high point for the hotel was the concierge, who was excellent. She set us up with great meals, including at places that were not for tourists, every single night. The hotel is also well-located in the middle of the city and near lots of mass transit. The downside is the hotel itself. It is in dire need of an update. Worse than that, our hotel room was non-smoking but, because all rooms face a common enclosed atrium, cigarette smoke from other floors was wafting into our room. There was no way to escape it apart from suites, which were down hallways away from the atrium. It is unacceptable to have this problem for all non-smokers. I should add that the hotel is very affordable. Kyoto lacks much in the way of "luxury" hotels because that market is taken by ryokans, which I strongly recommend.

Stayed three nights with a junior member of the family. The family room type B was perfect for us. Two rooms separated by a door, yet still in the same room. And the rate was very reasonable.
Hotel directly connected to Kyoto subway , and Gion and many temples and castles within walking distance. Couldn't be better.
Only minor issue: breakfast buffet - although plentiful is far from outstanding and the charge way too high to justify it.

Room Tip: Familyroom type B worth checking out

Stayed two nights. This was by far the best hotel during our two week trip.Location excellent with many restaurants, coffee shops covienience stores,Metro station within a five minute walk.Room spacious and clean as was bathroom with separate shower and bath.Aircon available and efficient.
Minus points were a lack of english instructions in the room for the water boiler and TV control.
Breakfast served on 17th floor with great views, but sadly there was a long queue and we had to wait 20mins for a table and on entering the restaurant found many empty tables-We found this very frustrating with limited time to join our tour group for departure

Room Tip: Have a high room at front of hotel for great sunsets and arrive early for breakfast!

Make sure you get a map of where to find the 'Welcome' lounge if arriving at Kyoto Station - we came on the Nozumi Shinkansen from Tokyo and could not find it - we were given directions to the bus pick up, but since this was an unmarked carbide location, cold have worked out badly.
Secondly, we specified 2 adjoining rooms - although we got assigned rooms together there was no internal door - which was a pain with young kids.
Right, enough of the moaning - this was a perfectly located hotel - we had not expected to be able to walk up and down the river, almost as our main thoroughfare - but it worked very well!
Guest Relations staff were most excellent and were a able to help me book a handicrafts workshop that my kids really loved.

Well located hotel, close to the river with cherry blossoms in abundance. Very convenient for shopping.
The hotel needs to attend to the breakfast needs of the guests as each morning there was a queue of people waiting to get into the breakfast room, not good enough for a hotel of this size and quality.

Yep, everyone here is spot on that this hotel is great for it's location. It is considered a 5 star hotel and even though the hotel is very nice (more below) it didn't have that "wow" factor that I've had in other 5 stars like the Ritz Carlton but based on location it is a great place to stay….so 4 stars instead of the amazing-wow factor reserved for the 5 stars.

Hotel is located centrally in Kyoto and walking distance to restaurants, shops, and even some temples etc. The hotel has some historical significance as well but sorry don't have that detailed information and can't comment on this. We checked in a very busy time in Kyoto during the cherry blossom festivals so it was busy all around. Front staff and check in were very friendly and accommodating. We were checked into our room within 10 mins upon arriving. Lobby area is clean and has a very1920's resemblance with it's decor and appearance.

ROOM: room was clean and modern with a TV, hot water dispenser, free in room Wi-fi and a nice view from the 8th floor. Bathroom was average size with nice shower and tub and good water pressure-hot water. Again no amazing features but nice room. Bed was comfortable and clean. Walls are a little thin and did hear some noise but nothing out of the ordinary. From the other reviews you do hear sirens but thankfully our room was not facing the street and would request a room facing the "river" and not the street.

Common Grounds: Very nice and clean. Again a 1920's feel as I believe the hotel was built around the 1920's and they keep this charm.

I can't comment on the exercise room or pool but it is not free so did not use it.

We did have daily breakfast at their 17th floor restaurant and the buffet was excellent. Fresh fruit and a good spread of many different items, well worth it!

LOCATION: Great!! Hotel is literally above a subway stop. You take the escalator down 2 floors and you are there so if anything else this is worth it! From here you can take the Subway all throughout Kyoto and connected with their "JR" line train (above ground) to may temples and sites. Hotel is also next to many restaurants/shops that are below the hotel and just by the location.

Positives:
-LOCATION!!!!
-Free Wifi in room.
-Great service
-Great buffet breakfast.

Negatives:
-Have to pay for gym.

I would recommend staying here and again great location.

Tips on Kyoto:
Subway and JR train are great for getting around.
Do the Philosopher's hike (in guidebooks) and great to do during the cherry blossoms.
