“Great service, western style hotel, convenient location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 2, 2013

The hotel is very old, I think they were celebrating 125 ? Years when we were there. But it does not look dated and worn. We reserved about a month before our trip and got a good discount. They actually just accept reservations without a credit card to guarantee the room. I guess the honesty system still works in Japan. Very surprising. This is a Western type hotel, with large rooms( for Japanese standards) and full service, with staff all over the lobby and entrance. The key is old fashioned and the only slight inconvenience is having to turn in the key whenever we go out. But because of the great service, they actually remember which room we are in and have the keys in our hands before we even reach the front desk.
The room was spacious, non smoking, and has wifi included inthe room. Our room has a gorgeous view of the mountain and they even have a little printout to identify the landmarks outside our window. Bathroom is great, with the Toto toilets , great toiletries, and complete bathrobe, bedroom slippers.
The hotel is located within walking distance to a lot of restaurants, the shopping places etc. plus, if one needs to go to Kyoto Station, the hotel has a free shuttle to the station( their office is about a block from Kyoto Station).so convenient.
We did not use any of the other facilities of the hotel since we spent all our time sightseeing and just came back at night to rest.

Pleasent 2 night stay, but perhaps we were a bit less thrilled than some reviewers. Its a property with impressive public rooms but a slightly dated feel, though none the worse for that really. Excellent service and fairly well priced during our August stay. Nice little touches such as tiny origami fingeres in the rooms. Central location, walkable to some sites, but some nighttime noise even on 15th floor (not too big an issue for us). Breakfast was good rather than great, and expensive. Strongly suggest an inclusive rate if its available. No turndown service, which surprised us a little.

Overall more 4 than 5 star, but we'd be back if in town, which tells you what you need to know.

Only stayed at this hotel two nights and wished we had stayed longer. Location easy for us to explore and find our way back not matter how far we traveled. The staff are always helpful and cheerful. During our stay, Kyoto Okura had two pillars in the lobby displaying a local artist, which I recommend you visit his studio www.ki-yan.com. Thank you for taking an interest in your local talent and introducing them to us. We were very fortunate during our stay to experience a festival July 17 and the parade of all the different local districts showed off their display floats. Very lively and fun! The grandeur of the lobby, the room was Western large and comfortable, the staff all made our stay inviting, welcoming, and content. We enjoyed walking the river and the streets, such an enjoyable, lovely city.

My family and I stayed in the Okura and it was great. The rooms were very big - we had a travel cot with us and there was ample space to put it up and the bathrooms were nice and clean. The buffet breakfast was really good. Location-wise it is very central, it's on a pretty main road but you're close to restaurants, Pontocho, the food markets and lots of sites. Overall a great stay.

I can recommend HOTEL Okura Kyoto because staffs all polite and servve wih warm hospitality. There is baggage carry service between JR Kyoto station and the hotel with 300JPY for a bag. Though I didn't use, shuttle bus service is also available. Western breakfast retaurant has nice view from 17fl., tastes goods and has much valiety.

Room Tip: 鴨川沿いの方が当然良いと思います。river view should be best.

My daughter and I stayed for 3 nights end of July 2013. After reading the glowing reviews in TA we had fairly high expectations. The lobby area was lovely, opulent and old world. The service was wonderful. Then we got to the room....threadbare carpeting, dated furniture and VERY basic Bathroom. More like a Holiday Inn than a 4+ star hotel. We asked to be upgraded and were shown 2 other rooms. The first was a slightly larger version of the same room. The second had been updated and was marginally better so we opted to pay a bit more for the better room. One the plus side room was clean and beds were comfortable and the view was lovely. But, towels were thin and only 2 of each were provided. Bathroom was dated. Breakfast buffet was unimpressive and had a cafeteria feel. All in all, not terrible, but would not stay there again, nor recommend this hotel for a 4-5 star experience.

On a three week trip to Japan we were lucky enough to find the Hotel Okura. Its location with immediate access to the subway (Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae Station) and the multiple restaurants in the Gion district make it a perfect local. And then there is the Nishiki food markets nearby and shopping arcades as well.
The hotel room was of a good size and perfectly presented. The courtesy and attention given by front of house staff was amazing and added to the overall feeling of "welcome". We will stay no where else when we next return to Kyoto and will be recommending this hotel to any of our friends who visit this wonderful city.
