“An old fashioned hotel.”
Reviewed January 22, 2013

My experience at this hotel was mixed, great first impression from bell boys to check in to concierge But was disappointed when we got to the room. Supposedly 5 star hotel, but no wifi in the room. Only cable . The exterior of the hotel and lobby looks like old world grandeur , but rooms were more like a motel. It had a 1970s/80s feel without the stylish retro feel. Pillows were very flat, carpets threadbare and bathroom was utilitarian . I was expecting more from a 5 star hotel especially having moved from the hyatt regency to be closer to the GION area. However the staff were skilled, spoke good English and helpful.

This hotel was a welcome change from the usual. The entry atrium is large and airy. The lobby has a pleasant ambiance and the cafe is a nice place to have tea. The check in process was fast and efficient, the concierge and guest relations staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly.

The hotel room is quite large for Japanese standards. There are multiple sockets that will accept foreign plugs. A nespresso machine is provided.

The hotel is located in a very good area, near tea shops, the Gion district, as well as being right on top of a metro station.

On several occasions I walked from the hotel a few hundred meters to enjoy walking on the banks of Kamo river or along the little alleyways of the Shirakawa canal. There are always plenty of taxis in front of the hotel should you wish to go somewhere further removed.

The Chippendale bar was very pleasant as well, with a very good selection of Japanese whiskys and single malts. Smoker friendly .

All in all, a satisfying stay and I think both business and leisure travellers will not be disappointed if they choose to stay in this hotel.

The Hotel Ocura is well located just on the fringe of the shopping district. It has an upmarket feel to it and is well appointed. The staff are particularly helpful. The concierge was always able to recomend and book an appropriate restaurant that fitted the budget I gave.
The room was well presented with twin 3/4 size beds and a nice bathroom. There was individual room air conditioning control, but only an ethernet connection not wifi, however work is currently being undertaken to install wifi in every room.
The buffet breakfast is expensive, but the view from the dining room is excellent.

I stayed here for a night while in the area and it was perfect. As with most of the high end hotels in Japan, service was outstanding and everyone makes you feel like a rockstar.

As others have noted, its well located and has reasonably large rooms. The internet is wired, so no chance to use my ipad. Room and bathroom are tastefully done and appointed.

I had little time in Kyoto, and this hotel was great. Typical tiny single room (it's Japan!), but great service, and location: subway stop is literally in the basement of the hotel, and a whole slew of bus stops right across the street. Plus walking distance to Nishiki Market.

I tried booking directly with Kyoto Okura but nothing was available on their end. I finally found one (only) deal on Hotels.com and booked a superior twin room through their website. The room I had was huge and fairly well equipped. Free Internet in the room but no wifi. Big bathroom with a bathtub plus a shower although I was surprised to find body lotion was not included in rge

This is a high-end hotel, but worth the money. Our room was large, as was our very modern bathroom. Service was excellent. Location is great -- above a subway station, and on a street with several useful bus lines. Restaurants are expensive and you can do better outside -- it's a five minute walk to the charming Pontocho district.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a high floor facing east. All the rooms have views, but the old part of the city...
