“Luxury in the heart of Kyoto”
Reviewed November 5, 2011

We spent 3 nights at the Hotel Okura. This is a grand feeling, old hotel. The room was a good size and the bath lovely -- with both a generously size stall shower and separate tub. The staff was fabulously welcoming and helpful. The location is excellent for visiting Kyota tourist destinations.

The restaurants are quite pricey so we did not eat in them at all, with the exception of one meal in the less expensive Japanese restaurant in the underground shopping arcade in the hotel's basement level. That meal was ok, but nothing special. For breakfast, there are a number of western style bakeries and coffee shops (including a Starbucks) within blocks of the hotel.

Room Tip: Pay extra for a mountain view room, especially if you are likely to rise early. We awoke to beautif...

Stayed at Hotel Okura Kyoto for a couple of nights - the service that greets you the moment you step into the hotel is overwhelming...extremely helpful and wanting to help without being overbearing. Room was great, spacious and had all the necessary amenities to make a stay comfortable. If there were one drawback, working desk is kind of small and crowded with stuff, making it difficult to spread out when working. If you can get the special rates at sub USD180, it would be a great deal!

The nice thing about this hotel is that there are surrounding things to do after the Shrine and Temple visits - after a day or 2 of visits, one could get "shrined out" so having some alternative activities to do is nice. The Teramachi street mall, and surrounding areas have lots of interesting shops and food places to explore. If you want to walk, you could actually make your way from the Teramachi Dori mall all the way to the Nishiki market - something fun to do on a slow day, browsing along the shops. Lots to be distracted if you have the time and patience to understand the language.

The hotel is also not too far a walking distance from the Kiyamachi Dori and the Pontocho District - interesting place for food and people watching - there is an official sign board in the area proclaiming that Pontocho District is the "gayest" district around, although it wasn't clear to me what that term meant in this context, translation and all - walking around, it didn't strike me particularly it was one or the other - just an interesting place with food joints, and drinking places with lots of people of both gender going about their business of partying and eating.

This is a lovely hotel with charming employees and beautiful sleeping rooms. The Japanese restaurant on the 6th floor offers a Japanese breakfast that is delicious. Dinner in the same restaurant was great. The menu was quite long and varied. We tried three different things (including sesame tofu) and the food was presented beautifully and was so tasty! The hotel is close to shopping and other restaurants. Wifi in the lobby was most appreciated as we had trouble finding wifi hot spots during our stay in Japan.

This was our second stay at the Okura. To sum it up: excellent service, wonderful staff, large comfortable rooms and a great location.

From the moment you walk into the hotel you experience its quality service. Our large double room had a City view and free Internet LAN access. The staff will be extremely helpful if you need information on getting around Kyoto.

The buffet breakfast on the top floor with views of the river and the western hills is outstanding and very elaborate. If it is not included in your room rate, breakfast is pricey, but worth it. We chose the buffet every other day of our stay, but on other mornings we walked to area coffee shops/restaurants for breakfast “sets.” There is a small coffee shop across the hotel’s driveway, and there is excellent Starbuckswith a view – and deck – right on the river at the Sanjo Ohashi bridge.

The hotel is near the Pontocho, with its excellent restaurants (favorites of ours are Zu Zu – an Izakaya - and Mimasiya), near the covered shopping streets and a short walk to the Gion. There are also a lot of Irish bars in the area that often have live Irish music including Tadg’s and the Gael.

Tip. City view rooms are less expensive but same size as the River view rooms. There is a direct subway entrance in the basement.

Pleasant classy decor, friendly and helpful staff, well maintain and clean, convenient location, nice smoking bar on the 2nd floor. The single room is rather small for a 5 star hotel but then again this is Japan. Choice of breakfast is good with options to have either Japanese breakfast at 6th flr or the usual breakfast at 17th flr.
Internet connection is fast enough in the rooms. Wifi is only availabe at lobby area. These are provided at no charge.

....and not even close to the proper standard. We paid 47,000yen (yep, forty seven thousand) for a set menu including Abalone and Kobe beef. Both were a Big disappointment - Abalone rubbery and tasteless, Kobe fatty and 'meh'. The side dishes were very average. WAY overpriced, and didn't feel like a special experience at all.

Pros: Very well staffed from bell boys to concierge to front desk to room service. All of them spoke fairly good English, not to mention very courteous, appearing all happy and good looking too! They could not offer me enough help ranging from wheeling my luggages to my room, offering travelling tips to tourist sites, picking up my room key before I step out of the hotel, where to get better currency exchange rates, and booking for an emergency dental appointment! Spacious bathroom with glass shower corner and a huge bathtub. Bathroom amenties are impressive with good quality foldable hair brushes, razors, toothbrushes, herbal bath salts, shower caps, and bath robes). The convenience of having a safety box was a big plus for me. Every Sunday, there is a garage sale at the city hall across from the hotel. 5 shopping districts are within walking distance. Evey month of 12th day the Germany bakery shop at basement 2 offers 20% discount.

Cons: For the price paid, I wished they offer free shuttle ride to and from Kyoto station. They are close to subway station but I find it easier to just take the cab around the city.

Room Tip: room on the higher floor are quieter. check for sepcials during low season.
