“One of my favourite hotels in Kyoto”

I decided to stay in the Hotel Hokke sun as the price seemed reasonable at the time of booking. I had booked last minute and could not be more pleased with my choice. The staff where amazing, the cafe downstairs was awesome, and the facilities were superb. After a week of rough travelling I discovered they had a coin operated laundromat downstairs where was super easy to use and operate. I will be coming back to the Hotel Hokke sun next time and staying for even longer!.

Functional clean and quiet, and wonderfully central for someone coming in by train. That the room was small with little natural light was balanced by it being a very comfortable bed and providing three gerat nights' sleep! Good, lively and full restaurant right downstairs.

I stayed for 3 nights in Feb 2014 and would recommend this hotel.

The location is great – right outside Kyoto station, so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding it. It is also very easy for getting buses to the various temples/shrines in the city as the bus station is outside the hotel. The hotel provides maps and details of the bus routes to take. A taxi to the downtown area where lots of the restaurants/bars are will cost around 1000 Yen.

Our room was very big and had 3 double beds in it (for 3 of us). The bathroom was also big and very clean. There was a large wardrobe also to accommodate our clothes. Free wifi was provided both in the lobby and the hotel.

The staff were friendly and happy to assist with any questions we had. There is a café on the ground floor of the hotel which serves tea/coffee and reasonably priced breakfast.

The price was reasonable too and I would stay here again if I return to Kyoto.

Rooms are on par with other similar hotels, maybe a little bit bigger but maybe slightly more dated in terms of style. The room had a nice layout, with enough space to put my backpack on the luggage rack and still walk around it. Bathroom was typical of the Toto "kit bathrooms" in Japan. Nice enough, but not much shelf space to put your things on. Lighting in the room was very good for all tasks. Bed and bedding were comfortable enough. There is free Wi-Fi in the room, which is nice. There is a self-service laundry room on the 4th floor. The hotel is across the street from the train station, next to the Kyoto Tower building. There is a restaurant and cafe on the first floor, reception is on the second floor. While maybe not the strongest hotel in Kyoto, still a very reasonable and decent choice.

Pro: close to train station, decent rooms, pleasant staff

Cons: maybe a bit dated decor

Tip: rather than cross the street to get there from the station, take the faster (and warmer in winter) Porto underground walkway. There is also a selection of shops and restaurants down there.

Located next to JR Kyoto station, you can literally see the hotel once you step out of the station. Lobby is located on the second floor of the building. There is also several bowls where guests can have a piece of candy. Female guests are also entitled to take two beauty products from a wide selection at the lobby. Rooms are of the usual Japanese size and cleanliness so no complaints there. The underground shopping arcade next to the hotel is a great source for food with a wide variety of food. Being in the centre of the city, many of the city buses originate from here so travelling around is no issue. A delightful hotel overall.

if you arrive in Kyoto station and you come out from the central exit..you can literally see the hotel from the escalator, yes..it is that close, and yes,,this is the most affordable hotel i have ever stayed in Japan..and did I mention it just's within less than 2 mins walk from the station..I did..ok ok. If you plan to tour around Kyoto, you will need to be really near the main bus station "Raku bus" helps to bring you around the attractions in Kyoto, each ride is 220 yen no matter where you go. So, I highly recommend this hotel because it is affordable and it is located at a really strategic location

the room is slightly bigger than most Japanese business hotels. Reception staffs are polite and can speak fairly good English. Location is good particularly if one wants to travel by train to nearby cities such as Nara, Uji, etc. A lot of restaurants in the neighborhood and the Family Mart convenience store is one block from the hotel. Ogawa Cafe on the ground floor offers reasonably priced breakfast. This hotel definitely is on the return list
