Owner description: This Zen Buddhist temple was converted from a former residence of Emperor Kameyama upon his death. The beautiful grounds include several buildings, hiking trails and a classic Zen garden.

While popular with Japanese tourists the multi-temple Nanzen-ji complex doesn't seem overly crowded, even in peak leaf season.

While the separate entry fee policy for the various temples and gardens can add up, the Hojo building and its associated Zen garden is definitely worth forking out for. It is wonderful sitting in the sun on the verandah contemplating the garden. It would be even better if they turned off the canned music loop!

The leaf colour in the trees in and around the temple complex were stunning!

Nanzenji has many gardens inside. Those are very symbolic and clean. You can see your mind reflecting the garden which is quiet, passionate, sad, happy, hopeful, etc. This is tipical Zen movement. I was there in late Summer before but October and November are the better season to be here. I recommend you to go there in early morning, it's more wonderful.

Its so beautiful at fall.
The best time is around mid November. There is a price to pay if you go inside but it is also beautiful from the outside.
If you go inside you can go beyond the small graveyard over there - exit from the back gate and turn left. Go up the stairs and you will find a small serene shrine with a small bridge between the woods up on the mountain.

Unfortunately overpriced. Everything in the temple area is 500¥,one for 300. Basically if you want to enter a building you pay.
We went up into the Sanmon which is great as it's the only gate that had allowed us entry into it so far. But for 5 bucks you really need to stretch the time you spend looking at the sights and walking around in a circle.
It would be great if you could buy a pass that let you into all the gardens and temples, but unfortunately not so.

If youre looking for a temple that escapes all the tourists this is the place. Plus, from here you can easily walk to Eikan-do which is a must.
