“Authentic Kyoto experience”

Staying in this machiya has been an unforgettable experience. It was easy to book, thanks to Thomas' and Rieko's friendly and efficient guidance which immediately put us at ease. The house is at a great location, in a very calm neighborhood, yet with easy shopping access and close to excellent restaurants. If you like walking, like we do, you can easily reach a number of the most interesting sightseeing spots and enjoy walks by the Kamo River. The house was clean and comfortable, authentically restored with much taste, and made us feel welcome from the first moment. It was incomparably more interesting to stay in this machiya rather than in a hotel!

Management Response
Nov 19, 2012
Thank you for your honest, charming, and insightful review of your stay at Gion Kyuraku. It is always our hope that every guest feels that they are taken back in time to experience machiya living as it was a century ago, however with all of the modern conveniences that we have become accustomed to. Your comment about the authentic restoration is greatly appreciated. Hundreds of hours were expended on this restoration project of a tea master’s residence. We wish that every guest has an ‘unforgettable experience’ like you did. It is our pleasure, Rieko, and Thomas.
