“Beautiful Historical Ryokan”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

This ryokan is run by the sixth generation owner. It looks small from the outside located in a small street, but inside it is spacious with many rooms. Our room is on the aecond floor. Although not so big, but the room is so cozy. What i love the most are the people here. Although their english are not so fluent but they are very helpful and hospitable. The kaiseki are so nice and delicious. The western breakfast is marvelous too. I highly recommend this ryokan

It's obvious this ryokan has a lot of history and tradition. The standout for us was the wonderful kaseiki dinner and the beautiful breakfasts the staff prepared for us every morning. Our attendant was attentive and timed every course for the kaseiki dinner very well.

Service - The staff were lovely, attentive and very discreet - besides from when we needed them for things such as check in/out and laying out the tatami, etc, we hardly saw them.

Location - The location was very convenient also - it is 5min walk to the subway station, a 5-10 minutes walk to nearby Gion and bar/restaurant area, and is within walking distance to most sites in Higashiyama.

Bathroom - While some ryokans only have shared or public bathroom facilities, this ryokan offers ensuite bathrooms. Our room had a western style toilet, separated from the bathroom which had a wooden bathtub + shower. The ryokan's own onsen was fine also.

This was our big splurge of a stay in Japan. We wanted to stay in a traditional ryokan, and wondered how it would differ from a modern ryokan and other accommodations (aside from the price).

You'll see and feel it once you arrive. The sight of at least five people bowing at you makes you feel like royalty. They immediately get your luggage and offer you slippers. When you get to your room, the fresh flowers and artworks add luxurious touches to an otherwise simple layout. The bath and toilet room is big, and I especially loved the wooden bathtub, which fits 1 person only.

Snacks are served by the person assigned to you. Ours was a friendly, active old woman and though she spoke no word of English for she only knew Japanese, we managed to understand each other.

After snacks, she rearranged the dining set and lay down our beds. She was quick and efficient, and we slept very well that night.

Our room was on the 3rd floor, and though it wasn't a garden view room, we still had a view of plants and bamboo.

Breakfast the next day was served in our room. It was the best: grilled salmon, poached eggs, and soft tofu, among other small plates. We were full and happy with our healthy, filling meal.

Other amenities: wifi only at the first floor, with connection intermittent. There's also an onsen. The lounge/communal room at the first floor has a mix of Western and Eastern decor.

The ryokan is located close to Gion, 2 bus stops away or a 20-minute walk. Subway and bus stops are also nearby.

The sincere and happy service, small thoughtful touches, and comfortable room make Seikoro a memorable experience for us. We could only afford to stay one night, but this was one of the highlights of our trip.

We stayed here for a night to enjoy the traditional japanese hospitality. It was recommended by my travel planner and we truly enjoyed our stay.

The place is conveniently located next the main road and train station is only 5 minutes walk from train station. Food is about a block away and 3 blocks away from Gion area where we can camped out to look at the beautfil Geisha.

We arrived at the ryokan in the early afternoon and the room was not ready. We proceed to do our Philosopher's Path walk for the 2nd half of the day. Upon return to the ryokan after dinner, we were served with welcome cookies and welcome drinks in our room and all our luggages deposited with them in the afternoon were already neatly arranged and brought to our room before we came back.

We proceed to the onsen and enjoyed ourselves dipping and relaxing in the pool. The bed were laid out on the tatami for us when we return from our dip and we have a good night rest for the night though my room mate were making silly pose in the complimentary kimonos ....

We opted for the opitional Japanese breakfast and the breakfast was served by them after they removed and packed up the futon bed we slept on the night before.

We were spoilt with the many varieties of food served during breakfast in our room and we were so full until we could skip lunch for the day.

Service was tremendously good from them and we could see that all staff members were making sure that all their guests enjoyed their stay with them. Kudos to the effort put in and when we depart the ryokan after breakfast for our next destination pulling our luggages along the alley to the nearest train station, they actually bid us farewell and stayed on the road until we make a turn to the left to the station and we were out of their sight.

Room Tip: The straw filled pillow is a must to sleep on. Very comfortable!

Seikoro has a wonderful location near a subway stop & easily in walking distance to sites in Gion. Plus taxis were very easy to hail from main street nearby. We were a family of four & enjoyed the traditional room layout. The staff was really nice & supportive. The onsen...oh the onsen...sigh! Did one each morning of our stay & it was amazing. Even got our girls to try it & despite themselves they really liked it. The hotel is not fancy. It reminded me of your grandmother's house...if your grandmother were Japanese, ha! It was a little funky & had a great vibe. We really enjoyed our stay here! Breakfasts each morning were lovely!

Stayed for two nights at the Seikoro Inn. The rooms were quite spacious and staff were attentive in cleaning and evening turn down service. We sampled the breakfast and dinner for one of the two nights that we stayed at the property.

PROS:
-very conveniently located next to the subway station
-staff were reasonably attentive and prompt with cleaning and evening turn down service
-rooms were spacious and the tatami mats were thick and reasonably firm
-the Japanese breakfast is quite good

CONS:
-Dinner was very average and felt rushed. Our attendant kept on bringing out subsequent courses while we were still eating previous ones even though we asked her to slow down
-The walls are very thin, be warned

Room Tip: it is best to avoid rooms that are right above the reception or lobby as you will hear people chatte...

We had stayed at a ryokan in the Hakone Hills before this, so understood what the concept of Ryokan was. Frankly this was not great. The staff were welcoming but utterly obsequious, in a slightly offensive way. The building was traditionally Japanese but rather tired. The dinner was substandard, the breakfast was okay. Not hugely appealing.
