“Basic, Good Value Hotel in Excellent Location”
Reviewed March 23, 2012

This is a basic and clean hotel at a very reasonable price for Kyoto located along the canal by the Modern Museum, Philosopher's Walk and Kyoto subway (all less than 10 mins walk). There were twin beds in our clean and orderly room (no one should expect boutique or major chain hotel level rooms). The staff speaks English well and we found them incredibly helpful over the course of the 4 nights we stayed here. The amenities at the hotel include - good Japanese and Western breakfast (Y840), excellent bike rental (Y1,000/day), free fast wifi in the lobby, affordable washer-dryer and a free Japanese public bath.

Room Tip: We're a bit surprised by a few of the bad reviews since it wasn't our experience but looks l...

From what I found online, Kyoto seems to be far more expensive than Tokyo (where I live). This hotel is certainly evidence of that. It's pretty expensive to stay here, but it was basically the cheapest thing I could find in Kyoto. The building is old and has the feel of a youth hostel or something; we stayed on the 4th floor and there was no elevator. The room, bed, etc, were very old, but very clean and well-maintained. On the plus side, the staff was really friendly and helpful. Also, their sento (Japanese style communal bath) is really nice and the fixtures seem to be brand new.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a lower floor!

I read the good reviews for this 'hotel' and I don't recognize that they are describing the same place that I stayed at. Kyoto has a bad reputation for hotel quality and this place only reinforces this. We only picked this place because it was the only one we could find that could accommodate our group. That should have made us suspicious from the beginning:
-The stains on the rug look like they came from the leaky refrigerator on the floor.
- I second the comment from another review that complained about the smell from the bathroom. Despite leaving the exhaust fan on all the time, and leaving the window open, the smell still permeated the room.
- When I emptied the bath water (the smallest bath I ever encountered in Japan), the water came back up the drain under the sink and left the bathroom in an inch of water.
- There was an old blood stain on the comforter.
- They apparently have no such thing as a 'single' room and charge our single guest the full price for two people.
- The rooms are in bad shape. The wallpaper is pealing off, the desk as lots of marks and scratches that it looks to be about 15 years old.
- After two guests left after one night because the room was so dirty, the staff insisted on charging them for a second night as a cancellation charge. (This ended up in 3 separate 45+ minute conversations with the staff in Japanese with little results)

That being said, everything seemed to function (like hairdryer and refrigerator). The wireless access does not reach into the rooms, but functions fine in the lobby.

I'll have to post the photos of the mold, the rug stain and the old desk later after I download them.

We ended up paying a rate of over 60 Euros per person. The couple that checked out after one night found something downtown near the train station with much better quality for less.

Room Tip: Find another place if possible.

Kyoto Traveler's Inn was great, the staff's English was pretty good and were also very helpful and cheerful.

We stayed in the Western style accom. It was small but great for what we wanted, we walked to a lot of the attractions and just loved staying here. If we could of we would have extended our stay a little longer.

We would definitely recommend this accommodation

Well you get what you pay for and this hotel is as good as it comes for budget travelers. In fact, if it was 15 or 20 years ago and I was in college or in my early to mid 20s I would really LOVE this place. Its really suitable for college students and young people backpacking. The place is kinda like a college dorm.

The hotel and the rooms are not luxurious. It's a crash pad really and the place is old but they got everything. We were in room with 3 single beds, and there's a couch that can fold out into a sofa bed. At night I kept thinking of how much fun it would be if I was in college and was staying here with a bunch of girlfriends chatting into the late night. The lobby has a cafe, and it's like a college cafeteria, and young people in fact were there at night hanging out and having fun. I can totally see myself here in this cafe with a co-ed group of friends at night if I was a college student traveling with buddies and staying here. By the front desk there was a bulletin board with various information and flyers posted. Vending machines are all over and you can get hot or cold cans of tea, or sodas or water or snacks. There's even a hot water dispenser if you want to make cup of instant noodles. In the basement was a communal bath with hot soaking bath too, which was great to relax in after a night of sightseeing and walking.

Although the entire set up here is like a college compound and there were a lot of young people staying here, there were surprisingly many middle age to older guests as well. That was nice for us so we didn't feel too self-conscious.

The location of this hotel is amazing! It's within walking distance to many great sights (by walking distance I do not mean short walks, but you can walk everywhere or rent a bike and bike to the sights too). There are many great looking restaurants right nearby the hotel. We wish we knew this as one night we were wandering around Ginza not knowing where else to go. Actually, the hotel front desk has a map that is in English and Japanese that tells you where the nearby restaurants are so be sure to ask them for it. There's an amazing looking Japanese restaurant just up the street one block away and we discovered it too late to try it.

Staff was pretty good and speak English.

Japan traveling can be expensive so if you need to watch your budget this place is quite alright. Strange thing is that I can't say this place is no-frills either because it kinda has everything...cafe, vending machines of lots of snacks, hot bath that opens till 3am, free internet at the lobby, newspapers, travel guides ads and brochures all readily available.

As the title says we were trying to have our cake and eat it. The travelers inn is superbly located for sightseeing (which is why you are planning a trip to Kyoto I'll wager). The staff speak excellent English, the rooms are basic but comfortable and there are some really decent restaurants within easy walking distance.

Unless you are after the full Ryokan experience then how long are you planning to be in the room anyway. Kyoto is a friendly bustling town so I hope you have a great time (I cant wait to go back).

At the time we were in Kyoto it was a holiday weekend (which we hadn't realised) so had difficulty booking accommodation, and were very limited on choice. Chose this based on location and price. We opted for a Japanese Style room for the cultural experience! The room was basic but clean, and had a nice outlook to the hills and the temples. Found the mattresses a bit thin to sleep on, but my partner had no problem. Brilliant location for exploring the temples in the area, bit more of a walk in to the city but doable. The coin laundry was an added bonus for us, and the free internet in the lobby was useful. Overall basic but nice place, in good location for sightseeing.
