Kyoto Royal Hotel & Spa

Firstly this hotel has a really good location. On one of the main shopping streets, with subway, arcades and Pontocho all within 200m. Also, 205 bus stop outside the hotel goes straight to Kinkaku-ji temple and is the best way of getting there.

A few tips on the hotel. We booked a double and twin room. Avoid the doubles as they are tiny. Twin rooms are nearly twice the size, with two comfy chairs, cupboard is double the size and there is a place to put your suitcase.

Breakfast is very expensive, but just round the corner (turn left out of the hotel, down to the lights and left again) is a great boulangerie and cafe that serves excellent breakfasts and is great value. 3 to 4 people fed for the same price as 1 at the hotel. Very busy at times but worth waiting for a table. See photo.

Our first time in Japan, and the beginning of a long journey/ The hotel was in an ideal location, and we had the best time - the rooms were spacious and clean, the staff very helpful, and the hotel was excellent. From that location it was easy to find things to see and do by bus, underground or just walking. Staff directions had us seeing the best of the sights . We arrived in Kyoto after flying in to Nagoya - so easy to do this - and we caught a bullet train to Yokohama to catch our cruise ship -equally simple. Seeing Mt Fuji from the train was a great surprise. Our first trip to Japan will not be the last, and we will stay once again at this hotel.

This was my sixth trip to Japan. My husband and adult son shared a twin room, and I had an adjoining room to myself because as a rule Japan hotel rooms can be rather compact. We stayed three nights in early June after a week in frenetic Tokyo. We had a very enjoyable stay at this same hotel six years ago, and were happy to discover that its high standards were still being upheld. The staff was very professional and cordial. The rooms were very clean and serene. The buffet breakfast in the lovely restaurant was especially delightful. We much preferred this downtown location to staying in the busier Kyoto Station area. This hotel is adjacent to a major subway station with an underground shopping mall. It is a short walk to the Teramachi shopping area and Nishiki food market. We chose to take taxis to other sites around the city because fares in Kyoto are very reasonable. We will definitely stay at this hotel the next time, and maybe I'll get a relaxing shiatsu massage in my room!

Kyoto royal hotel is in the heart of Kyoto,
Shiyakusho-mae metro station is 1 minute away by walk.
In front of the hotel, there are bus stops, you can visit almost all the temples in Kyoto with these buses. So i think the location is perfect.
Another very good thing is the breakfast. At the hotels in Osaka and Tokyo, the breakfast are not good, i mean there's almost nothing to eat. But here at Kyoto Royal Hotel , you can find cornflakes, tomatos, cheese, jams :)
The rooms are clean and big enough for 3 person (one is 5 years old child).
Another good think is the front desk people. They give us bus tickets, maps about the hotel area, maps of the temples.
They are very very helpfull.

Overall, i strongly recommend this hotel :)
Hope to see Kyoto and stay again at Kyoto Royal Hotel and Spa.

this is a reasonably priced good hotel . i would say it is a good value for money , coz it has all the basic facilities , well packaged. the rooms are quite spacious as compared to the overall hotel standard in Japan. The staff is hospitable and good.
The only problem was that it is distant from the city center and it is expensive to travel around in Kyoto.

Room Tip: if we take a room in the center of the city , u save on your traveling expenses .

Stayed here four nights on business, which brings me to different parts of Japan about once a year. I found this hotel to have the standard excellence of service by front staff and very clean rooms that I've found at most locations I've stayed at. Room was (much) larger than expected, with a generously-sized bed; standard Western doored closet was replaced by wall notch with hooks, which I thought worked well. Larger than usual bathroom also appreciated. Only minus to the room itself was an interior courtyard view with frosted glass window = dimmer light and no view, not helpful to overcoming jet lag. Fairly standard restaurant downstairs provided good Western & Japanese breakfast options. Easy walk to river and several shopping / restaurant districts & metro = outstanding siting.

During our Japan trip through several cities we stayed in this hotel for 5 nights so we could see Kyoto and Nara. You need a minimum of 3 days in Kyoto and 1-2 days in Nara.
The hotel is very nice and has an excellent location, walking distance from main attractions, or bus and subway transport. We rented a bike and found it to be an excellent means of transportation allowing you to visit the Imperial palace, Nijo castle do part of the philosophers path etc.
The reception staff and cafe/breakfast staff is overall friendly, except for one male at reception who seemed grumpy all the time.
Our room was very small and had no view, the windows were sort of opaque and gave into a court I think. There wS one good size bed with a firm mattress. We found it comfortable as we were used to them after a full week of travelling in Japan.
The bathroom was ok, small too but comfortable.
One thing that I did miss from all the hotels we stayed at was body cream/milk.
There was no drawer, instead there were some hangers for the clothes, so when you are staying more than 2 nights it can be a bit uncomfortable.
Breakfast was ok, you had a choice of Asian and Western dishes. It was acceptable to good.
The bar downstairs was nice but people are allowed to smoke, as in many cafés or street restaurants. We are not used to this and in some cases had to quickly finish our drink and leave.
The concierge and reception staff are very helpful and made reservations for us into one wonderful place where we had Kobe beef.
In spite of the bedroom being small we did enjoy Kyoto and the hotel very much.
One last point. There is a Spa but we did not get a chance to use it, so I can't comment. It does look quite good though.
