ANA Crowne Plaza Kyoto
Ranked #49 of 379 Hotels / Ryokan in Kyoto
Reviewed April 3, 2013

We stayed here for a night before our 1 day Kyoto Tour early on the following day. The location of the hotel is excellent as it is just next to Nijo Castle which is where the day tour began for us. The hotel provided complimentary shuttle to Kyoto Station as there is no nearby subway or train station within the hotel vicinity.

Our overnight stay was comfortable although the bathroom is small but my partner commented positively on the carpet in the wash basin area which is a plus point as we do not have to step on cold floor during the start of spring. Amenities is up to mark in line with Crowne Plaza standard. Free Wi-Fi was a plus point in this hotel as it allows a few gadgets to be connected simultaneously.

Thank you for providing us a goos stay even for a night.

Free shuttle from the station starts your visit to this hotel. Excellent rooms, very quiet convenient to all the Kyoto attractions. Concierge Simon was a great assistance over the 3 nights and it was great to have an Aussie on the staff. Food a bit expensive and the charge for the pool and gym is the only negative. Free wifi was great.

Centrally located but it has not be renovated for sometime. If the price is right, it may be worth staying. Service is excellent. We ordered a room with two double in the room. We thought we had it but found out there are no beds like that. They gave us extra cot without additional price so grandkids can sleep comfortably. Wifi is available in the room free so that is good. If you don't mind older style rooms, you may get a good price. "E" is missing from Crowne but it is still part of Crowne Plaza Hotel chain.

Room Tip: If the price is the same, try getting room overlooking Nijo-Jo Castle.

If you're in Kyoto as a tourist, the ANA Crowne Plaza is a good option, not just for being a few steps away from Nijo Castle, but also because it's centrally located and very convenient for the metro and bus system. They also have a shuttle bus to/from JR Kyoto station, but from 20:00 to 7:00 you'll have to rely on other means of transport.

As for the hotel, the lobby looks quite grand but old-fashioned too, and this is accentuated with the female staff dressing traditionally; this is a nice touch for tourists, though, but nevertheless some general refurbishment should take place soon.

I had read some mixed reviews about breakfast, but I was pleasently surprised. There 2 restaurants to choose from, Japanese or Western. I chose the latter, Cozy, which actually have both types of cuisine, and I really enjoyed it, especially the exotic teas from the machine.

All in all, a good option in Kyoto at affordable prices.

Great location and amenities at the Kyoto ANA Crown Plaza. Staff were friendly and helpful, especially concierge Simon Finch, who definitely helped ensure a great stay for us by recommending sites and restaurants, even making reservations in Japanese. Rooms are Japanese style, low to floor beds with furniture that is nice and comfortable. Breakfast was included in our rate, a buffet is available from 6 am to 10 am in "Cozy" the lobby restaurant. There are several other restaurants in the hotel as well, but we did not try them. The bar/lounge is a little pricey, but has a good selection of whisky. Location is convenient to the subway and several bus lines. One of the major sites to visit, Nijo Castle, is right across the street.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the castle.

The hotel is situated right across the road from the Nijo Castle. The rooms were in need of refurbishment, but were comfortable and the bathroom was large and well fitted. The breakfast that was included in our package, was excellent and offered a huge variety of Japanese and English dishes. The staff were friendly and helpful and everyone seemed to be able to speak English.
I think this is good value for money in a country like Japan where most hotels are very expensive.

Room Tip: By the time you visit ask if they have any refurbished rooms. The hotel has just changed it name to...

The hotel is located near the Nijo castle, which castle is quite a historical site(but not very good maintenance). The shuttle to Kyoto station is running at a 30-min interval and CLOSE at 8pm. So it's not very convenience. It takes about 5-10mins to closest subway or bus station. So I think the location is just average.

The lobby is large and the staff are dressed in traditional japanese clothes which gives a good feeling. The room is tidy and clean and doesn't have much to complain (except it's smaller size).

The check-in is quite a long process and take me about 20mins. Just don't understand why it takes so long.
