This hotel looked a bit old from the front appearance and the area surrounding it looks pretty dull. Whilst the location isnt the most strategic, its being made up by the free shuttle bus that takes you from the hotel to the Kyoto Station every 15-30 minutes. Quite handy when you just arrive at the Kyoto station, please look out for the bus at the Hachijo Entrance/Exit near McDonald.
The room was on the smaller size and bathroom was just as smallThe one thing I liked about this hotel was that ability to open the window and let fresh air in and air quality is great, they even had an air filter/cleaner in the room just in case. While the hotel is not in such a busy touristy area its a little on the quiet side with very little choice of things to do near the hotel that is within walking distance. But in having said that, the location of the hotel is close enough to some of the tourist attractions like shrines/temples. The room we ordered was a triple bedroom and it was reasonably comfortable to fit two adults and two young children. The experience I had at the reception desk was very similar to what another reviewer mentioned. It wasnt so much about not being able to speak English fluently, it was just the way I was made to feel at the check in/out. I just dont feel the friendliness or warmth of the person handling me, it was a bit cold and disinterested. After spending nearly $500 AUD per night which was one of the most expensive hotel in our stay in Japan, this was in no way matched in the service and perhaps the only poor service I ever had in my whole trip in Japan. It seems to me the best staff and most friendliest was the shuttle bus driver, the bellhop and the concierge person. If I had another choice I would look for a hotel nearest the train station as your base in Kyoto as I find this is to be the most convenient place for travel, eating and shopping.

Thank you for your stay with us and your comments.
We are glad to know that you enojoyed our breakfast very much.
The water in the patio, which you can view from the lobby is from underground of the hotel, and this natural water is used in guests rooms as well.
Your next visit to Kyoto, please try to have experience the difference of the water.
We look forward to welcoming you soon again in the near future. Thank you.

The location was really not a problem due to the very convenient shuttle available for the guests departing from the Kyoto station every 15min or so. The bad experience (really bad) is due to the poor service provided by the staff: unfriendly, very poor English-speaking. I really have not felt well received in this hotel. Besides that, the rooms really need a refurnish now! The breakfast was separated as western and Japanese style, but the there is no option to choose for the western style if you wake up 8am in the morning, only Japanese style available at this time (western breakfast only available after 9am). The Japanese style breakfast is very expensive, 50% more than the western one, and not that special. An absurd!

Coming from the Conrad in Tokyo to this was a shock I was not prepared for. Room was like a box. Bed was hard as a rock. Pillows would fit in a dolls house. We were just glad there was plenty to do in Kyoto so that we didn't have to spend time in the hotel. Final warning is don't order the fresh orange juice in the restaurant unless you want to pay Yen2,600 for two small sherry glasses of orange.

Room Tip: stay somewhere else

Look and feel:
Hotel looks very new and luxurious. When I entered the lobby, I was greeted by a serene pool of water and a mini waterfall. A mini bamboo forest can be seen beside it. Lobby was wide and spacious and added a premium feel to the hotel.

The room was large and spacious and a 3rd bed could be fitted inside if there is a need. My room was on the 7th floor and overlooked a car park and a temple so it felt good being able to see far away.

Location:
Not located near any subway. The nearest subway is Gojo station and it is 10 mins walk away.

Amenities:
I was out most of the time and didn't use any amenities. The restaurant menu did look very good though.

I stayed in the Tokyu Hotel together with the spanish parents of my girlfriend in October this year.
We selected this Hotel to have at least one Hotel with international standard and food during our one week round trip in Japan. (The other nights we stayed in Ryokans.)

The Hotel was recently renovated and the new rooms are simple and good. However, please take care, because some rooms are still old and might not meet your expectations.

The breakfast buffet offers international and japanese dishes.
From 9:00 you can get a very special price, but you have to choose either international or Japanese.

The hotel offers a shuttle bus to Kyoto station which we used several times since it is free of charge and very convenient.

Close to the Hotel is the famous Nishi-Honganji temple (world cultural heritage) located.
The other famous must see temples and gardens can be reached by taxi or bus.

All together we liked the hotel very much and it gave us the relaxation and power to walk around Kyoto the whole day.

Room Tip: Superior to the back side

The Good:

Nice rooms, nice bathrooms, clean rooms, good service. Great free shuttle service from the train station runs about every 15-30 minutes.

The Bad:

Really hard beds.

Kettle for making tea but no coffee, sugar or milk provided.

Breakfast was confusing. If you want only the western breakfast which is less expensive than the full Japanese breakfast you have to wait until 9am which is a little late if you have work to do and places to be elsewhere in the city.

The staff does not speak English there was one person (named Ilene, I think) who was fluent but otherwise communication is not easy. I think this is a better hotel for Japanese people to stay in than English - only foreigners.

The location is not near anything in particular. It's a good twenty minute walk to the center of Kyoto. Taxis were about ten dollars to the center of town. The metro is good but crowded and tiring to walk through all the tunnels.

I would suggest something more central or even close to the park as a better bet for sight- seeing and/ or business.
