This hotel looked a bit old from the front appearance and the area surrounding it looks pretty dull. Whilst the location isnt the most strategic, its being made up by the free shuttle bus that takes you from the hotel to the Kyoto Station every 15-30 minutes. Quite handy when you just arrive at the Kyoto station, please look out for the bus at the Hachijo Entrance/Exit near McDonald.
The room was on the smaller size and bathroom was just as smallThe one thing I liked about this hotel was that ability to open the window and let fresh air in and air quality is great, they even had an air filter/cleaner in the room just in case. While the hotel is not in such a busy touristy area its a little on the quiet side with very little choice of things to do near the hotel that is within walking distance. But in having said that, the location of the hotel is close enough to some of the tourist attractions like shrines/temples. The room we ordered was a triple bedroom and it was reasonably comfortable to fit two adults and two young children. The experience I had at the reception desk was very similar to what another reviewer mentioned. It wasnt so much about not being able to speak English fluently, it was just the way I was made to feel at the check in/out. I just dont feel the friendliness or warmth of the person handling me, it was a bit cold and disinterested. After spending nearly $500 AUD per night which was one of the most expensive hotel in our stay in Japan, this was in no way matched in the service and perhaps the only poor service I ever had in my whole trip in Japan. It seems to me the best staff and most friendliest was the shuttle bus driver, the bellhop and the concierge person. If I had another choice I would look for a hotel nearest the train station as your base in Kyoto as I find this is to be the most convenient place for travel, eating and shopping.
