“Clean and comfortable”
Reviewed June 24, 2013

The hostel was small, quiet and comfortable. It is right in the heart of the Gion district, which is a beautiful area to wander around. Located right next to a subway exit, and has a bus stop across the road. The staff were fantastic, and were able to provide english maps and give recommendations of places to visit and the best way to get there. Rooms don't have an ensuite, but the shared showers are good. The bed was comfortable and the heater worked well. Wireless internet was free and worked well. Reception isn't open between 12pm and 3pm, so if arriving at that time of day you can't drop your bags off and go sight seeing.

Jam Hostel is by far the best hostel I have ever stayed in! Only opened in 2012, the hostel in very clean, modern and all its faciliites are very well maintained with daily cleaning. The staff are very helpful and are often themselves staying in the hostel, so can provide great advice on the city. They provide free 24h showers and have a little fridge and microwave as well including coin laundry. Every dorm room also has a toilet, sink and mirror in it. The location is the best in Kyoto, especially for its amazing price. All major sites can be reached easily by either walking, JR or bus. The hostel is also in the Geisha region. Nice SAKE bar under the hostel as well. The only improvement I could suggest is to put the toaster in the actual kitchen rather than the Sake bar, so that it is available all the time to the travelers.
Definitely stay here if visiting Kyoto, I stayed a week and did not want to leave!

Room Tip: Do not be afraid to stay in the 8 bed dorm room, the rooms are very spacious and you will not feel c...

Jam is in a fantastic location. You're even apt to see Geishas in the neighborhood. The hostel is close to lots of shopping and places to eat. The staff is super friendly and helpful. Our six bed dorm room was clean and the bunk beds roomy. There's a bathroom in the room and showers nearby. We were able to do laundry in a washer/dryer combo machine. The sake bar downstairs offers 72 different kinds of sake.

Hot Tip:
Down the street are a couple places that rent bikes. We rented bikes for a day (1000 yen each). My advice: watch out for poorly marked "No Bike Parking" signs. Our bikes were towed and turned our afternoon into a disaster.

We stayed here for 2 nights and we love this place! ideally located in Gion, it is close to a few bus stops. The only problem was that we took a while to find this place initially. Better direction from the hostel would be helpful for others to locate this place. We stayed in an 8-bed dorm and the room was spacious with toilet ensuite! The facility is very new and clean.

I would highly recommend this place for its location and facilities.

Jam Hostel Kyoto Gion This is listed on TA as a Hostel which it is BUT it also has a small bar section. In the bar the is a large selection of Sake from all over Japan for JYE1,000 you can taste 3. The operation is family owned and they did not speak alot of English but enough to figure out the Sake tasting :). The amount of polished rice determines price. If you want to try a few Sake away from the tourist trail head here.

This hostel is in a perfect location in Gion, walkable to all the sights in the centre of Kyoto. The staff are really helpful and speak good english. The rooms are clean and new. Bathrooms also clean if not a little small - as is the case in much of Japan. Sake bar and cafe downstairs.
