The lovely Boulangerie was around the corner from the the Kyoto Royal Hotel where we were staying and offering a very good and inexpensive breakfast option to thee expensive buffets featured at the hotels.
The choices for breakfast were good and included juice and coffee with an English menu and wonderful service.
I highly recommend!

If you're staying at the Royal Park Hotel and miss French styled breads and pastries, this outlet is famous for just that. Do also give their breakfast set (which includes the bread basket) a try.

I hope that I've got the right name for this place ... I was trying to find the right name for the place that says "Boulangerie" on its sign. It's about a block south from my hotel (the Okura), past the Catholic church, turn left on the first main road. Starbucks is a little further down the road, but doesn't open early.

Much as I enjoyed Japan (really, I did) I was not thrilled by the breakfast options that I saw the first days: busy restaurants with steamy windows full of laughing Japanese people eating things I didn't recognize and couldn't manage to order; or the hotel's $35 breakfast buffet. (Actually I did that once, it was very good but waaaay more food than I wanted.)

So this place was a lucky accident. They have an English menu, and they don't seem put out by a solo eater. I had the croque-monsieur (toasted ham sandwich smothered in cheese) several times, with excellent coffee .. the price in 3/12 was 580 yen, not bad. They also have many egg-and-bacon options, and seem to have a very lively bakery, too.

A big recommendation for this place, a life-saver for me.
