“Western Luxury, Japanese style”
Reviewed January 29, 2016 for a stay in January 2016

We stayed here for two nights after 10 days skiing in the alps. I have to say, it was so much colder in Kyoto than Niigata/ Nagano! However, the house was well equipped with heaters and we were quite comfortable. Most people wouldn't use the kitchen much but as I took the opportunity to invite Japanese friends for dinner, I did use it and found it very coooold! I suppose it's the price you pay for such impressive architecture- the entrance way is beautiful. Everything was as advertised. The bathroom was lovely ( nice products) and our friends really enjoyed the double western room. The instructions for getting to check in were perfect and the staff were professional, friendly and helpful. A great stay, over all.

Dear Kellie,

Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review of your stay with Machiya Residence Inn Kyoto! The week that you and your guests came to stay with us was quite cold, wasn't it? However, we are happy to hear that the facilities at the machiya house you stayed in helped to make your time with us more comfortable.

We are also pleased to hear that you made use of the kitchen found at Shobu-an during your time with us! All of our staff members at our check-in office enjoyed meeting you and welcoming you into our city. We hope you keep us in mind again during future trips to Kyoto!

Thank you again for your review.

Kind Regards,

the Machiya Residence Inn Kyoto Staff

“Amazing Clean Beautiful One of a Kind Property”
Reviewed October 26, 2014 for a stay in July 2014

Absolutely amazing place in a really central yet quiet area of Kyoto. The house was extremely clean, tidy, comfortable and very very beautiful. The bath and garden were gorgeous and my friends and I could not stop taking pictures. Customer service was great really friendly and their english skills were great constantly going out of their way to help especially with getting lots of luggage transported from Kyoto to Osaka for us after our stay. Definitely recommend this house for everyone except people that have difficulty climbing stairs since they are very small steps and narrow.

Thank you for your review! We are pleased to hear that you and your friend enjoyed your stay with us at Shobu-an. The charm of a Machiya is not only its aesthetically pleasing interior and exterior, but also the beautiful garden within. We, at Machiya Residence Inn, strive to have all of our guests get the most out of their stay in Japan, so our staff members will always be willing to help with whatever you may need! We look forward to welcoming you back again in the future!

“Perfect stay in Kyoto”
Reviewed July 28, 2014 for a stay in July 2014

We had a 3 nights stay at Shoubuan and totally loved it! A very traditional and authentic Japanese experience - yet we did not go without any comforts. The house has such an amazing feel, a very cultural experience with the tatami matting and futons, right down to the Japanese tea pot and loose leaf tea. If takes a while to get use to the legless chairs around the low table but well worth the experience! The small garden is beautiful and the bathroom was one of the loveliest I have ever seen with a very hi tech toilet! The house is large enough that even with two teenage children, you can still all have your own space. It is walking distance to Gion with many convenience stores near by. I would definitely recommend a stay here!

Thank you very much for your review. We are pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay with us in Shoubu-an. Traveling can sometimes mean giving up some of the comforts of privacy and your own space, but we hope you were able to spread out and relax in our machiya. The low tables and seating do take a bit of getting used to, so we hope it did not cause you any troubles. Thank you again, and we hope to see you in Kyoto again!

“Authentic experience and Fantastic service!”
Reviewed June 24, 2014 for a stay in May 2014

It was a nice experience staying in a machiya. Really enjoyed the stay there. The staff was really helpful as we had some issues with the wifi and Internet connection on the 1st day, he dropped by the machiya after after working hours to resolve the issue. A convenient location with many cafes and restaurants within walking distance.

The bathtub was huge but looked dirty with stains which seems unable to remove.

Thank you very much for your review. We are pleased to hear you enjoyed
your stay in Shoubu-an. We are also glad to hear that our staff was able to be
of help to you, and apologize for any inconveniences that the problematic
internet connection may have caused.

As can be seen in natural hot springs, the water naturally has minerals that can build up or appear as a slight "stain" on tiles and bathtubs. We take the cleanliness of our facilities very seriously, and would like to assure you that it is the build-up of natural minerals in the water. Thank you again, and we hope you will consider us in the future if are even back in Kyoto!

I rented this house with 3 friends and we all loved it. It is a very traditonal, super cute, very clean, comfortable and stylish little house. The staff was helpful and we had all the commodities in the house (including wifi). I would definitely recommend it to my friends.

“Our family Machiya Kyoto stay”
Reviewed April 8, 2014 for a stay in March 2014

What a wonderful way to experience real Kyoto. This house has been restored to its true Machiya glory. We where a family of 6 adults and one child. We enjoyed the two story home so much for our two night stay. Location is good, can reach places by foot or by taxi. The set up allows for 4 bedrooms, 3 using tatami and futons and one with western bedding. A well appointed kitchen allows for breakfast to be made at home and a great bathroom with ofuro and separate shower. Wifi, TV, laptop and mobile phone are all there. Linens are provided and daily maid service. Full size bathroom amenities offered. The style is traditional with modern elements - AC, heating, shoji screens, modern lighting and over all a very comfortable place to call home when in Kyoto and allowed the family space when they needed and a nice seating area to be enjoyed communally.
We would book this place again when we visit Kyoto and for families or groups looking for a great option for accommodation once should consider this over a hotel and or smaller ryokan.

We are incredibly pleased to hear that you enjoyed your machiya experience. Families often stay here so we try to equip the place with as many modern amenities and comforts from home while at the same time remaining faithful to the deeply traditional aspects of a machiya. Thank you for recommending this place to other families and large groups. We are looking forward to your next visit and hope that we can make your stay an even more enjoyable one.

“Unique experience of modern meets tradition in Japan”
Reviewed January 16, 2014 for a stay in December 2013

Since Kyoto is known as a Japanese cultural hub, my friends and I decided to stay in a machiya (traditional Japanese townhouse) as opposed to a ryokan, where there are strict rules and you cannot make much noise.

This machiya had plenty of room for 6 of us. The rooms were spacious by Japanese standards. The architecture was neat and luxurious, exactly like the pictures on the website. It was also great to have wifi, phone access to English speaking operators and a book with tourist destination recommendations and directions! Also provided with a washing machine.

From Kyoto Station it was approx 15 min travel plus 10 min on foot, but how often would you go in groups large enough to stay in a machiya? I personally found it worthwhile.

Thank you for your valuable feedback. As you have stated, this machiya is quite spacious and offers more privacy than a ryokan, or traditional Japanese inn. It is also in a great location with easy access to Gion, Kawaramachi area and Nijo Castle. Nishiki Market is also within walking distance and a great place for dining out. We hope that you will choose to stay here or one of our smaller machiyas should you come to Kyoto again but with a smaller group.

All the best.
