Modern, clean and quiet hotel in outstanding location. Walking distance to restaurants, shopping and river front. Easy bus ride to all the major tourist sites. Friendly staff that speaks English well. Very good price for a downtown hotel in a major tourist city, especially Japan. 1000 yen (13 USD) cab ride from Kyoto Station makes arrival pretty easy.
As some have said, the rooms are a little small. But we had 2 twin beds and a small seating area with desk and TV. If you are in Kyoto for a few days, the space is more than adequate. There is so much to see and do in Kyoto you will hardly be in your room. We would definitely stay here again.

The location of this hotel is fabulous - it's a short walk to a subway station or the Hankyu Railway, a brief walk to Ponto-cho and Gion, and it's just around the corner from the major shopping boulevard and shopping arcade. There is a beer-and-wine store on one side of the entrance, and a bakery on the other.

The rooms are modern, decently equipped, and very clean, but tiny! We had the largest room on our floor, and it was cramped for two people and a vacation's worth of luggage. Soundproofing, both interior and exterior, is excellent. Wireless is good, although it stopped working a few times. There is an air purifier in the room that can be used dry, or has a water tank to make it a humidifier. Unlike the Japanese gentleman below, I had no problems filling the water tank from the tub faucet.

The hotel is low on frills and extras - bathrooms were equipped with the usual complimentary items, there were nice pajamas and slippers available, and there is a small guest laundry on the 2nd floor (with a very slow dryer). Irons and ironing boards are not stocked in the rooms, and the hotel only has a few on hand, so availability is a big challenge. There is no swimming pool.
The biggest issue (other than the small rooms) was that the hotel has very, very few non-smoking rooms. It seems that no matter what you request, you will be placed in a smoking room. The smoking rooms range from relatively mild cigarette smell to toxic nicotine wasteland. When pressed, the hotel staff will move you until you find a room you can tolerate, but they continually recite their contract, which they say clearly states that non-smoking room availability is not guaranteed. For this reason alone, I would consider staying elsewhere.

Room Tip: For Westerners unused to traveling in Asia, here is a tip - this hotel is typical in that they will...

Liked this hotel quite a bit. Location is excellent and staff provided professional and friendly service.

Laundry machines on 2nd floor are convenient. Keep the load small, as it does not seem to dry well. Oh, and you can buy beer and malt liquor drinks from vending machines on each floor.

Beware that the name is confusing. There is another "Royal" hotel & spa nearby. Even more confusing is that this hotel's logo refers to it as "THE" hotel. Huh?

"Small Double" means VERY SMALL. Barely enough for a double. Two people have to dance around each other.

24 hour Burger King across the street.

The hotel location was perfect : central enough but quiet, close to metro & buses, very short walking distance from the main restaurants area. Bedrooms were quite small (even for japanese standards) but well equipped and clean. Staff was welcoming & helpful. Buffet breakfast was nice for Asian taste, nice but not a lot of choice for occidental ones.

The location of this hotel is perfect, within a short walking distance to Nishiki Market, the riverfront, Pontch-to, the Gion District, the metro and several bus stops. There are restaurants in every direction steps from the entrance and there is a nice grocery store a few doors down. The rooms are clean and comfortable with lots of thoughtful amenities. The staff was very kind and helpful. We arrived late with our infant son having forgotten to reserve a baby cot for him. They had one in our room within minutes of our arrival. They also loaned us a plug converter. We loved everything about our stay here and would definitely stay again.

If you want a base from where to visit the wonders of Kyoto, the Royal Park Hotel The Kyoto is one of the best choice you can do. It is extremely well located downtown, but not too far from the magnificent Higashiyama neighborhood (15/20 min pleasant walk to Chion-in temple, for example). Being ±10 min from Ponto-ocho, a quality nightlife is also assured. The hotel is brand new, with some stylish touches. Room very clean with complimentary wireless. I didn't tried breakfast (available at an additional cost), as a French patisserie is just 1 min away. I am looking forward to stay there again. Strongly suggested.
