Royal Park Hotel The Kyoto

Certificate of Excellence

This hotel was just completed in Kyoto in summer of 2011. I travel to Kyoto about 8 times a year and have stayed in all the hotels in this area of the city. This is the best area in Kyoto to stay for convenience. The Kyoto Royal Hotel, and the Kyoto Hotel Okura, and now The Royal Park Hotel all share this excellent location. But, currently this hotel is hands down the best value in my opinion.

The place is brand new and it shows. Not tired like the nearby Kyoto Royal. Prices are currently excellent, nowhere near the higher prices of the Kyoto Okura with the current yen value, that makes a big difference. The rooms are smallish, to a typical Japanese standard. But, they are attractive, well appointed and comfortable. If you are all about luxury, the Okura will offer more high end amenities and larger rooms. But, this is a much better value often at a third the price or less.

Location, price and overall appearance, these people currently have the best combination in this area of Kyoto. Going back next week.

This brand new hotel is situated in a very good location of Kyoto. Though it is about 10 minutes taxi ride away from Kyoto Station, it's location is within walking distance to the shopping street of Kawaramachi-Dori and the entertainment stretch along Kiyamachi-Dori. Lots of eateries offering a wide range of cuisine at different price levels can be found in the neighbourhood of the hotel.

I booked a standard double room intended for single occupancy, and found the room just nice for one person, but will be too cramp if it has been another person in the room. The room is very clean (typical Japanese standard), well furnished and bed is very comfortable and very well insulated from traffic noise.

The only set-back for me about the hotel room is the size of the wardrobe or rather the lack of a proper wardrobe. The space for clothes is more like a coat rack near to the entrance of the room. Hence, I left my clothes in my luggage for the 3 nights duration of my stay in Kyoto and hung only my jackets and a couple of shirts that were already packed with hangers.

Following the suggestion from the hotel's concierge, I rented a bicycle from a nearby bicycle rental shop and had a great time visiting the major attractions, such as the Imperial Palace (which happened to be opened for free public visit on the day I was there), Heian Temple, Yasaka Shrine, Todai-Ji Temple, Kiyomizu Temple and Gion.

I would stay in this hotel again.

The hotel is very new and comfortable, near to Nishiki Market (10mins walk), Gion (15mins walk) and 1 station from Nijo Castle, near to subway station (Kyotoshiyakushomae & Sanjo). The buffet breakfast is nice to start a day of walking in Kyoto, (JY2100) recommended if you have budget.

Room Tip: Hotel rooms in Jpn is relatively smaller, the room i get is a superior twin room, consider large for...

This hotel was built in July of 2011 and it shows. Beautiful lobby! Staff was very helpful, with most speaking some English, and one American (I think) on staff at the front desk. It is in a great location, very central, and surrounded by many shops and restaurants on the main streets, and within easy walking distance to a plethora of inviting little alleys and side streets. It is also in easy distance from subway and bus stops, and about 1,000 yen taxi from the main Kyoto Station. Rooms are very clean and stylish, but small like all hotels in Japan. We were in the smallest room type and it was sufficient. Kyoto has so much to see and do, you won't spend much time in your room anyway. But the bed was very comfortable and included 4 fluffy down pillows, whereas other hotels had hard pillows.

Room Tip: All rooms are nice, but suites were very cool!

What a brilliant find. When we got there, the hotel was only one week old.

Pros:
- Everything in the room and in the common areas was incredibly clean and very elegantly presented.
- The location of the hotel is right near the major shopping district, walking distance from the Gion district, and a quick bus trip away from everything else. The only thing it didn't have is direct access to a JR line - but that was a very small inconvienience
- The staff are incredibly friendly, and went out of their way to make us feel welcome.

Cons:
- There was only one staff member that spoke English properly, and he was only allocated to the nightshift - so communicating with the staff was a bit difficult

We could hardly have found a better location in Kyoto. The hotel was right by the Pontocho area for restaurants and bars, the Gion area and the Nishiki market. Metro stations are located within 2 blocks.

The room was really comfortable and the bathroom was top-notch. The customer service was great too, and the breakfast, although expensive if not included in your room, was really amazing. The wifi network worked on my iphone but not the laptop, but they had cable available.

I had first booked with Expedia with a great rate, then booked 2 extra nights directly with the hotel, which turned out to be much more expensive. It still felt right to splurge with the quality of the place though.

You will definitely need no less than 5 days to go around Kyoto, there are so many great things to do and see! There are plenty of temples and parks, all of breathtaking beauty. There's a kabuki theatre near the hotel, the tickets can get expensive, but we took tickets in the backseats and still had a very good view. So snacks and drinks in the evening, go to A-bar. It's a bit complicated to find, but they have an english menu with great snacks and a good atmosphere. You don't need to look farther than Pontocho for food choices, and it's really great to stroll by the little river.
