Recommended by our hotel concierge and well reviewed generally, we chose this location for a kaiseki meal when we were in Kyoto. Classic kaiseki served in a traditional setting. Quite good, but a little overwhelming for our taste (perhaps we should have chosen a lesser menu). Not inexpensive, but the quantity and quality of service and space no doubt contribute to the cost.

We sat at the bar (as some trip advisor reviewers suggested) which was more fun for us than a private room. It was so interesting to watch your chef prepare dishes just for you! After an amuse bouche, our appetizers arrived in a gorgeous gift box; each morsel a little jewel. The set menus are 130, 150 or 180 yen. We had the medium size which was plenty for us. Cooked brim, vegetables, custard courses followed. By the 9th course, we were only able to try little tastes. There's always room for a petite dessert (the 10th course). We were amazed to discover that miso soup and rice courses are served nearly last in Japan. In American sushi restaurants, the miso usually comes first! We were unable to get into the main Kikunoi restaurant (3 Michelin stars) but were very satisfied with our experience here (2 Michelin stars). Since trying this type of dining is a must in Kyoto, I recommend reserving way ahead of your visit.

This is a unique experience and a superbly appointed location. We were lucky enough to have our own private room with impeccable service. It falls short of excellent as for the money we paid we expected each dish to be faultless and delicious. Standard was very good, but we've eaten better for a similar price.

Every time I've been in Kyoto. I stop here for lunch. Excellent food, Michelin starred, good service. If you want kaiseki cuisine, but don't want the entire kimono clad experience whilst sitting on the floor, then this is the place. About an 8 course meal- changes monthly to reflect the season. However if you decide to come twice during your trip, as we typically do, inform them and they will create a special menu for you upon your return. Chefs speak enough English to explain to you the ingredients and preparation. If you are unfamiliar on how to eat a certain fish, they will assist also.

We made lunch reservations 2 months ahead with the help of our Japanese landlady and picked the kaiseki meal - literally going all the way with experiencing what they had to offer. Meal was more than lovely with about 8 courses, very interesting offerings and innovations one would not see in a regular high end restaurant. Presentation was impeccable and the dining was complimented by the fact we had private dining rooms looking out at a lovely garden. It was truly almost zen, savouring our lunch slowly while enjoying the view outside. Some reviewers earlier wrote that they did not enjoy the experience as much , which is unfortunate because kaiseki is always an adventure - you won't know what you will really get and the potential combination is endless. Just be a little open minded and adventurous and savor everything.
