SOLA ソラ

A taxi driver can drop you off on the street. It's right next to beautiful fan shop, set back off the street around 10 feet down a narrow walkway.

They have set meals we got two Kyoto Beef Filet and two Kyoto Beef Sirlon. The service was as you'd expect excellent and the beef was delicious. The set included a drink, bowl of rice, a tofo dish, a salad and a bowl of miso soup.

It took quite an effort to locate and then book dinner here but the trouble was well worth it. On arrival, we were escorted to our own room and slowly sunk to the floor to our mats and a well deserved Sake before the meal started in earnest.
And what a meal it was. Course after course of heavenly food and lots of great wine too!
At meals end the staff, the chief - in fact everyone, came out to the pavement to see us off - very happy, very full and very lucky to have been able to eat at this fine restaurant.

In kyoto we have decided that we will not miss the opportunity to try the kaiseki meal in the countless restaurants in Kyoto, and we have chosen Roan Kikunoi. Mr. Haraguchi from Tenseian Haraguchi booked us a lunch here as they only take reserved patrons. Upon arrival, they greeted us with my name, but I think our appearance gave it away, we looked like oriental foreigners. We were immediately escorted to our tatami room (which we did not choose) by two lady in kimono. They did not speak too much, but presented us immediately with sakura sake (delighful), and followed by the appetizer of mix items. The lunch consisted of a 7course meal and every course presented was a blow to the senses. Every texture, every taste, smell, is combined in a way that we have never experienced before. All in all, a very great first experience in kaiseki with a good value of money!

The title says it all. I'm quite a foodie, so have tried many great meals worldwide, but this is now my absolute favourite.

We went for the kaiseki lunch menu. I took the Y4200 one whole my partner went for the Y7350 one. Both have some similar dishes, but mostly different so it makes sense to go for different menus and sample each others food. The Y7350 had more expensive ingredients and portion was also more, so well worth the extra IMO. Go for lunch, where its a lot cheaper than for dinner.

Ask to sit at the counter so you can watch the chefs prepare the food. We sat there in fascination as we saw a chef spend an hour preparing an intricate garnish of carrot and turnip curls - who knew!

At the end , they offered us for free to takeaway the leftover salmon roe rice, which they had extra in the stone pot used to mix before serving, made into rice balls. It was the first 2 Michelin star rice ball takeaway I've had as an afternoon snack!!

We consider ourselves fortunate as the above cannot be said for many starred establishments these days. We have been to enough starred venues whereby the starred chef's touches are merely a distant memory not reflected at all in the food nor the service. Roan Kikunoi is certainly not such a place. We enjoyed exquisite food & hospitablity at lunchtime service with Chef/Owner Yoshihiro Murata at the helm. It was indeed a privilege to watch the Master at work. Taking into consideration that an average meal of ramen& gyoza for two in central Kyoto can easily cost in excess of 3,000Y for two, the keiseki lunch at 7,000Y (there are other options ava) per person is really quite reasonable for all its variety and quality. Strongly recommend a visit to Roan Kikunoi if ever in Kyoto. Do remember to book a week in advance as it is a small establishment with limited seats.
