We consider ourselves fortunate as the above cannot be said for many starred establishments these days. We have been to enough starred venues whereby the starred chef's touches are merely a distant memory not reflected at all in the food nor the service. Roan Kikunoi is certainly not such a place. We enjoyed exquisite food & hospitablity at lunchtime service with Chef/Owner Yoshihiro Murata at the helm. It was indeed a privilege to watch the Master at work. Taking into consideration that an average meal of ramen& gyoza for two in central Kyoto can easily cost in excess of 3,000Y for two, the keiseki lunch at 7,000Y (there are other options ava) per person is really quite reasonable for all its variety and quality. Strongly recommend a visit to Roan Kikunoi if ever in Kyoto. Do remember to book a week in advance as it is a small establishment with limited seats.

Roan Kikunoi is one of 3 restaurants under Chef/Owner Murata-san, who is an acclaimed authority on Kaiseki Dinner. We had pre-booked the Autumn Menu 7-course Dinner and our party of 5 was given a small Tatami Room upstairs. We found the ambience relaxed, understated and refined, as expected. The Chef created wonderful dishes from fresh seasonal produce, tofu, fish, eggs, etc. Duck Liver Pate was the only meat item in our Menu. Every dish was more or less perfect, in terms of taste and presentation. Service was unfailingly gracious, with everyone making us feel very much at home, despite the language barrier. An unforgettable dining experience in Kyoto!
