I loved this hotel. LOOOOOOOOOOVED IT! Stayed only for one night and wished I could have stayed more.
I stayed in room 301, beautiful room with a cool Japanese style, very spacious with a little desk area, wonderful bathroom with wooden bath tub. Very cute yukata type of room gown.

Staff were extremely welcoming, friendly and helpful with directions and advice.

Stayed: February 2014, traveled on business

We stayed at Kanra after three wonderful nights at Mume so it was always going to be difficult to match the Mume experience. Kanra certainly won out in the room stakes - our room was big and very well laid out with massive bed, comfy tv area and huge bathroom complete with big tub. Service was somewhat impersonal and lacked the depth of knowledge we found at Mume but we still got some good recommendations. The location is convenient but lacking in charm of the heart of the Gion district. However... the little touches like the yukata, the super soft throw blankets and fluffy towels were very nice. Still recommend a stay at Kanra and good value for money

Small boutique Hotel, with spacious contemporary rooms. The bed was enormous, and simply enveloped our tired, well travelled bodies. Great location, with zero outside noise. Would recommend to anyone.
Staff attentive and extremely helpful

I can't say anything negative about this hotel, everything was just fantastic. The hotel itself has been refurbished beautifully, and for a very reasonable price we received a spacious, modern - yet very Japanese style, luxurious room. Such a relaxing space, my hubby and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay - we found ourselves coming back early because we were so looking forward to coming back to our beautiful room!! A fantastic break from busy Tokyo. The staff all went above and beyond what you would expect and whilst my hubby and I are very picky about our food - the restaurant is fantastic and the room service menu better than a lot of 5 star hotels I have stayed at. If having breakfast, I would recommend the Japanese style breakfast - beautiful and tasty!! We would definitely stay here again. Thank you Hotel Kanra Kyoto!!

Although this was the most expensive hotel we stayed in Japan, it was clearly our favourite.

The rooms are, as said in previous reviews, very stylish but it is the staff that make this place truly shine. We got them to book koto lessons, noh plays, kimono fittings, asked for bike tracks (so we could use the free hotel bikes), restaurants each night......each request was fulfilled quickly and always with a smile.

I already miss the great bath and the massive bed.

Everywhere we go in Japan, places we were visiting all seem to be located near a 7-11. Hotel Kanra was not an exception, and that is probably why it was actually easier to find than most reviewers here had mentioned. It's also convenient as it is only situated 10 minutes' walk away from the Kyoto JR station. Having the Higashi Hongaji temple on the way made the walk enjoyable as well.

We arrived late in the night and hungry but were welcomed by a friendly staff member. The warm wet towel and little cup of tea prepared for us also helped in making us feel relaxed after a wary day of traveling. After explaining everything we needed to know, she showed us to our room. Albeit small, it was everything I was looking for in a boutique Japanese hotel in a place like Kyoto. The room itself was decorated in light wood, finished by a chic black and white bathroom. And of course I appreciated the fact that the toilet seat was warm during the cold winter.

We found the bed a bit small to our liking and the air circulation was a bit strange since it was too hot around our bed and it was cooler near the door area. What we ended up doing was to leave the big curtain (which serves as a partition between the "bedroom" and the door area with windows) undrawn as to get some air while we sleep, but then close it once the sun is up and the light is getting too bright in the early morning. Luckily we were only staying for two nights and it didn't really bother me too much (as opposed to my partner, who is a light sleeper). The TV is also awkwardly located as it's hung on the wall right next to the sofa and bed, which would make it difficult to watch but it's not like we'd watch TV during our traveling anyway.

All-in-all I really enjoyed staying at the hotel. It's quiet, classy, Japanese-styled, with a modern, sleek twist to it. The staff is friendly with decent English language capabilities, and is always helpful and eager to assist. It always felt nice going back to the hotel after a long day of visiting. If I were to visit Kyoto again, I'd definitely stay at Kanra again but probably in a bigger room. Will definitely try out their restaurant too.
