“Perfect traditional townhouse with all the mod cons as well!”
Reviewed December 4, 2012 for a stay in November 2012

We loved our stay at this Machiya. It is very small but well laid out to make the most of the space. The Manager (Hiro) is very friendly and helpful to assist you with any special requests (e.g. local restaurants and a local playground for our 2 yr old). We loved our stay. However, you need to want to stay in a non-touristy part of Kyoto which means most people in eateries etc in the area do not speak English and many places are not open late.

“A great little place offering a chance to live like the locals”
Reviewed December 4, 2012 for a stay in November 2012

A great place thats not too far from the main attractions and Gion. Easy to find and in a lovely location for local shopping and food. Amenities in the house were good and there was a lovely feel to the place - really making the stay feel local. A welcome change to staying in a hotel.

“2 thumbs up for Kohakuan Kyoto Machiya”
Reviewed November 18, 2012 for a stay in November 2012

5 of us visited Kyoto and spent 4 nights in this machiya. We opted for this local accommodation because we wanted a place where the 5 of us can be together and didn't want to be pigeon-holed into your typical hotel room.
First impression, it looks like an old Japanese storehouse but inside, it is totally clean and complete with all the modern amenities that you will ever need, plus complete privacy.
It can sleep 6 persons comfortably with 2 rooms upstairs for 4 persons and a living room downstairs that can put out futon mattresses for 2 more persons.
It comes with 1 complete bathroom with shower facilities, and a smaller bidet. There is a washing machine / dryer, small kitchenette and full size fridge.
Overall, the stay is very pleasant and the neighborhood is quiet at night. I strongly recommend this place for any group of people visiting Kyoto as it is only 1 station away, Tofukuji Station (about 10 mins walk to the machiya) to Kyoto Station.

“The Perfect place in Kyoto”

The Machiya Townhouse is the perfect place to stay in Kyoto. We had a family of five(2 teens and 1 8 yr old) and this townhouse allowed us to experience how Japanese people live. A hotel would've required two or more rooms which we didn't want and it would've been much more expensive. The Townhouse was very clean and had many amenities. The kitchen was equipped enough that we cooked/brought in food several times. Two bathrooms was an absolute necessity. The bathrooms were very clean with plenty of hot water for two teenage girls. The luxury toilets were fun to try(warm seats, european bidet). Our location was ideal for catching the train or bus and walking distance to many stores(bakery, grocery...). The only negative was the Red Cross hospital(ambulances at night) and the busy street(ambulances again). Also provided was wifi, PC, cell phone to contact Hiro, maps, easy directions to get there, umbrellas and AC units in every room.
Hiro was the perfect host getting us situated and providing many details for us. A keypad entry system allowed us to come in very late at night.
I only wish we could've taken this place to Tokyo with us too!

“Beautiful Japanese guest house retreat with all the mod cons”

We enjoyed 3 nights of luxury in this lovely abode. Brand new facilities including laptop to use while we were there, no need for keys as use a PIN code, flat screen tv and beautiful bathroom with a view into your very own Japanese garden.

Hiro was our host who gave us the guided tour. He also gave a couple of recommendations on some great restaurants in Kyoto including one small restaurant just around the corner from the hotel (side street)
