This hotel is really hard to beat. First of all, it's literally a stone throw away from Kyoto Station, which makes all journeys a little easier.

It has an onsen (both indoor and outdoor) for hotel guests, and really have extreme attention to detail to make sure girls feel safe to take a bath there- the door to the female side has a password lock, and the password changes every day to make sure no creepy visitors can go in.

The room was quite spacious in Japanese standards, and was, of course, equipped with all basic amenities.

But what really impressed me most was the free late night ramen! It's simply enjoyable to have something warm down your stomach after an onsen bath, or simply an exhausting day of travelling. Two thumbs up for this!

A little tip for ramen lovers- this hotel is just opposite to two famous ramen shops in Kyoto, Dai Ichi Asahi and Shinfuku. There are usually a queue outside both shops, so go early (or really late)!

One minor flaw that could be dismissed given the above- when I asked for a socket converter, they did not seem to have any for UK plugs. Remember to bring your own!

Best hotel of our Japan trip was Dormy Inn in Kyoto. It is such good value. The rooms are very big and comfortable. There is an awesome onsen in the hotel and free delicious ramen between 9-11pm each night. The hotel is a few minutes walk from Kyoto station. Wifi was excellent in the rooms. The shower was pretty good too – strong pressure and nice toiletries – but you must try the onsen which makes bathing a pleasure. There is a handy laundry near the onsen (keep your 100 yen coins handy).

Perfectly located across from Kyoto main station, we stayed two nights before moving closer to Gion district. This hotel was very good value. Small, clean rooms, but great ammenities - free morning coffee, free laundry, fantastic 9th floor onsen, and outside onsen too! Great fun, great value establishment.

This is a great hotel conveniently located (basically) across the street from the Kyoto train station. I was a solo traveler so the room was fine for me, but might be "cozy" for two. Breakfast was not included with my rate, but the bowl of ramen at the end of a long day of sightseeing was a nice treat, as was the spa on the 9th floor. Room was very clean and included use of pajamas/slippers, refrigerator. They also included complimentary bottled water. No microwave in the room, but I did make use of one that was in a "common area" on the floor.

We stayed here for 2 nights after a stay in a ryokan in Gion, we had a massive 2 days of sightseeing planned as well as an early get away on a shinkensan after checking out so proximity to the station was important, and I can't say how many times we thanked our lucky stars about how easy it was to get anywhere. The hotel is literally completely across the road from this massive station that is the hub for all transport in Kyoto. It made life so easy being able to walk across the road and be on a perfectly timed train in minutes. The hotel is absolutely fine, our double room was a little on the small side but the view was great, and the rooftop onsen was incredible. It was good value for money, but really the winner for us was the location. It's also an easy walk to the Sanjusangen-do temple - don't miss this one - I know there is loads to see in Kyoto, but this one was very impressive with a massive hall full of 1000 buddhist statues.

Room Tip: We were on level 19 near the baths which made it very easy to duck in for a quick one. The views wer...

For the average whistle-stop visitor to Kyoto I would say that you can't beat this place: it is fairly newly fitted out, very close to the station (note you need the exit the station on the north side if you come in on the bullet train), and has a couple of nice touches with the on-site communal bath and free Ramen after 9pm. If you are coming in from Tokyo then this hotel is ideal.

The rooms have been recently done up to a good standard and the showers are particularly nice. There are good options for food close by and all main Kyoto sights are accessible as quickly as you can expect.

A note of caution: if you go to the smoking area you can see into what I am worried is a a favourite spa of the yakuza or some such opposite - loads of naked men with full body tattoos who might think you're staring at them - you have been warned!

Room Tip: Ask for a non smoking room

We chose this hotel because of the excellent reviews and location to the train station. We booked (2) rooms for our family of 2 adults and 2 children and stayed for a week. This hotel is very basic and you can tell where they cut the corners. You have to notify them when you want housekeeping to come - by putting a sign on your door. The bathroom isn't really even a bathroom, it's just a shower and toilet - with the sink on the outside, in the bedroom. One small trash can (none in the bathroom), walls scratched, carpet worn in places. When we arrived there was a man shuffling carts of laundry through the lobby and some patches of repair on the elevator. Just average! There is a laundry facility, which is nice to have. And the location is literally a 3 minute walk to the bus & train station - which is very convenient. Other than the location, I would really not consider staying here again.
