The Capsule Ryokan Kyoto is quite possibly the most unique place I have had the chance to stay at. The staff is extremely helpful and offer great insight into things to do (and eat) in the surrounding area. In terms of the rooms, they are extremely clean and in the case of the ryokan ensuite, you have access in what I feel is the best shower I think I'll ever see or use!

I would definitely recommend this place to any and everyone and really look forward to coming back again soon.

Room Tip: Choose the ryokan ensuite if you have the money - it really does have an amazing shower!

Booked two rooms ensuites (recommend for only 2 persons per room as the bed size isn't condusive for even another kid unless it's a baby) in November during the peak autumn season (used Booking.com to make advance reservation - highly recommended for peak season as hotels run out real fast). We like this particular hotel because:

1. Clean (we are usually very sensitive to odour in any room and glad to report that there was no smell at all in our rooms during the stay)

2. Quiet (we are light sleeper but somehow we enjoyed peaceful nights)

3. Receptionist/s speak good English

4. Convenience store just across the road (important because we were able to get our regular supply of mineral water and cheap breakfast daily)

5. Location? This is not really that near to Kyoto Station as it claimed. If you must walk, it will be an average 20 minutes walk per trip (if you walk fast). I strongly recommend you take the bus. The bus stop is well located just at the side of the road next to the hotel. You can buy the daily bus ticket on board (500 Yen for adult) and fully utilise it to see Kyoto (per trip will cost you 210 Yen). I would have awarded 5 stars if it was any nearer to Kyoto Station.

Price wise, this is more affordable than Toyoko Inn. I do not recommend Toyoko Inn during peak season because it is situated in the main shopping district and there's no way you could squeeze onto the bus departing from Kyoto Station. We were glad we spent less at Capsule Ryokan Kyoto and use Kyoto Station as our bus departing station.

Room Tip: Book earlier to secure a room during the autumn koyo season.

I stayed here in an ensure Tatami room for three nights with a friend, and it was perfect for us. Very close to the main train station but quiet enough for a good night's sleep.

The room itself is obviously small, this is Japan, but it met our needs completely. Who sits in their hotel room all day in a city like Kyoto? When we came back tired after a long day of sightseeing, relaxing on the beds and watching some bizarre Japanese TV was perfect.

The shower deserves a paragraph all to itself, it was truly wonderful. If you are traveling with someone you aren't comfortable with, be warned, the shower is in the main room, but it closes off like a space age escape pod, with an amazing from-the-ceiling rain-style shower head.

Friendly staff, and reasonable amenities. A great choice for any budget. Very highly recommended.

Stayed at the Capsule Ryokan for 3 nights in January 2012. What a pleasant experience! Spent two nights in the ryokan ensuite and one night in a tatami capsule for the experience. Both rooms are highly recommended.

First off, the location. It is literally 7 minutes walk from the Kyoto station. Instructions on how to get there are clearly given on their website. Very helpful and handy location indeed!

On arrival, we were greeted by the super friendly and helpful Tadeshi (sorry if I have spelt your name wrong!) who promptly checked us in, showed us the internet (free WiFi in the lobby and two free computers for Internet, one pay computer for printing and Skype, also free LAN cable for your laptop to use in your room or capsule) and tea making facilities then took us to our room. We were given instructions on how to use the massive monsoon shower, storage under the beds and how to lay out our bedding. The whole place is very neat, tidy and clean.

Each room/capsule has an awesome guide book made up by the staff at the Capsule Ryokan (much like a Lonely Planet but more specific to the location of the Capsule Ryokan) with places to eat, location of supermarkets etc, bus stops close by and main attractions close to the Capsule Ryokan. They also have photocopies of a map at the desk of handy places in relation to the Capsule Ryokan.

The ryokan ensuite itself is small (10m squared) but has everything you need for good nights sleep. It has an amazing shower in the room with powerful shower head, waterfall option and also side jets. The toilet has an automatic seat that opens when the toilet door is opened. The beds are super comfortable with thick mattresses, warm fluffy duvets and a good pillow. There is also a heat pump/air conditioner, TV, hair dryer and kettle provided in the room.

The capsules are equally as comfortable. There are 8 capsules in a room. Each person gets a locker for their baggage with lock. There is a TV in the capsule, light with dimmer, clock with alarm clock and fan. The bathroom facilities are shared between the 8 occupants of the capsules. There are two showers, one of which has a bath. Also there are two toilets available for use. If needed, ear plugs are available at ¥100 but I didn't feel these were necessary.

The best thing however, in addition to the great facilities as mentioned above, was the amazing and friendly staff on hand. They were always very helpful and took an interest in your daily activities asking how your day went etc. Always smiling and keen for a chat. They have excellent knowledge of the local tourist attractions and also how to get to places outside Kyoto for day trips (e.g. Osaka, Hiroshima, Himeji) which is all super easy with a Japan Rail Pass. Their English is also very good! There is always someone at the desk from 8am to 10pm with after hours access to the Capsule Ryokan through a locked side door after 10pm.

After such a great stay, we were sad to leave. Shortly after our departure, we were sent a follow up/thank you email. The price was VERY affordable. I would definitely recommend this place to all my friends who visit Kyoto in the future. 10 out of 10!

we had a nice stay here. Kyoto station is only a stones throw away so that was a bonus. We had a private room. The room shower was a highlight! Its like some sorta space capsule when u turn the light on! I could of used an extra pillow but overall the beds were fairly comfortable and the storage underneath the beds was a nice touch. The staff were nice and even tho a tad small the communal area is good with a pair of couches and a table and computers for net access. This was my first time in kyoto but Id have to conclude that the kyoto station area is the best place to base yourself in kyoto and capsule ryokan is a place I would definitely recommend to friends for the price and what you get. Will definitelty be bak

This was a delightful place to stay. The ryokan capsule rooms are fantastic, very clean and newly furnished. The staff are so kind and thoughtful and really helpful. I actually came back to this place after staying in another hotel \ capsule ryokan is the best! I would recommend this place to my closest friends and family and will definitely come back again.

We stayed in a private ryokan room with an aweome monsoon shower & super comfy beds. Clever use of space to store luggage under the tatami.
Very well located, 10 mins walk to Kyoto Station. Convenicen stores and supermarket within 5 mins.
Great restaurants and yakitori/izakayas nearby.
Couple of great temples 5 mins walk away, other main atrractions easily reached by subway from Kyoto station.
Staff speak a high level of English and were helpful with all of our needs as they arose.

Room Tip: Private room was an excellent choice for us.
